What do 4K and HDR actually mean?

Thanks to the latest generation of shiny new consoles from Sony and Microsoft, there’s two fancy new terms to try and get your head around — 4K and HDR (or high-dynamic-range). And, confusingly, the different consoles all do differing amounts of each, from the Pro to a normal PS4, Xbox One to the Xbox One S and the undeniably more powerful Scorpio.
Don’t worry though, we got you. Here’s a handy guide to make it all clear.
What does 4K mean?
- 4K means higher resolution so you see more detail, with crisper images. You need a 4K monitor or TV to see the difference.
- PS4 Pro supports 4K streaming, and upscales games to a 4K output.
- Xbox One S can stream and play 4K video, and upscales games to 4K.
- Xbox Scorpio promises native 4K support.
- Xbox One and PS4/PS4 Slim do not support 4K.
Pixels are important. More pixels, more detail, more immersion, and 4K certainly has a lot of them: it’s called 4K because it’s 3840 pixels wide compared to 1080p which is only 1920 pixels wide. In case you’re confused, they named 4K after the width and 1080p after the height. The pixel resolutions of each in full are are 3840 by 2160 for 4K, and 1080 by 1920 for 1080p.

So 4K is double the resolution of 1080p, which means more detail can be displayed on screen in a native 4K output. Images look crisper and more detailed, so you’ll be able to see things like defined wrinkles, scratched metal, and separate strands of hair. 4K ends up making a huge difference to the overall look of the image or game by bringing tiny details into focus. However, if it’s upscaled, it’s simply a picture resized to fit 4K. So while it might fill the screen an upscaled image won’t add more detail.
What does HDR mean?
- HDR means high-dynamic-range, so brighter colours, more contrast, and more detail in dark scenes.
- The PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox Scorpio support HDR, but only if you have an HDR-compatible TV and HDR-compatible games.
- The Xbox One doesn’t support HDR.
HDR stands for high-dynamic-range, and simply means you get higher levels of contrast plus brighter colours, meaning that it matches what we see in real life much more accurately. It lets you see detailed objects in the dark instead of just murky outlines at the same time as having pitch black and bright light sources in the same frame.
While you’ll only be able to see gaming and video HDR moving on an HDR compatible TV, it’s easy to see with photography. So take a look at these two images:

Netflix’s corporate communications manager Yann Lafargue says that HDR “offers a new set of tools we can use to make bright and colourful scenes really pop, and at the same time, bring out more detail in dark scenes”.
So, what does this mean for games? It means you’ll be able to see in dark areas instead of trying to make your way through various levels of murky light. Plus you’ll experience more dynamic colours, and shadows won’t act like a pitch black blanket which obscures all details. Everything will end up looking much more vivid too. There’ll be a more seamless transition between areas with different light levels too, meaning you won’t have to bump the brightness levels up whenever you go somewhere remotely dark.

PS4 Proの4KHDR画質にするテレビ側のHDMI設定とHDRの違いを比較【ソニーブラビア】 | シンスペース
PS4 Proを4Kテレビに接続したら自動的にHDR対応の4K表示に切り替わる…わけではないようです。
テレビのメーカーによっても違いますが、SONYの4K BRAVIAシリーズではHDMIの設定を「標準フォーマット」から「拡張フォーマット」に変更しないとHDR対応の4K表示できません。
ということで、PS4 Proでと4Kテレビで4K HDRの設定する方法と注意点について書いていきます。
なお、PS4でHDRの画面でゲームを楽しむにはHDRに対応したモニターが必要となります。現在のPS4の環境がPS4 Proと4KHDRに対応しているモニターかどうかをしっかり確認をしておきましょう。
比較的低価格で購入することができる4KHDRに対応したモニターはLG UK650Wなどがあります。
この価格で4KHDR表示に対応するのはなかなか凄いのでこの4Kモニターは本当におすすめです。

出力している映像フォーマットを確認する
場合によっては4Kテレビに接続してるのにPS4 Proが2K出力をしている場合もあり、僕の環境でも一番最初に接続した時はなぜかフルHDで表示していました。
でも、しばらくそれに気付かずに「やっぱ4Kって綺麗だよね！」ってドヤってましたから人間の目なんて大したもことないですよね…！
なので、まず最初にPS4 Proが出力している映像フォーマットを確認しましょう。PS4のホーム画面の「設定」を選択します。
「サウンドとスクリーン」→「映像出力設定」の中にある「映像出力情報」を選択します。
するとPS4 Proが現在出力している映像フォーマットを確認することができます。
この場合は4K画質になってましたが、カラーフォーマットがRGBではなくYUV420でHDR機能がOFFに。4K HDRにするにはカラーフォーマットをRGBにする必要があってテレビ側の設定を変更する必要があります。
「HDMI 2.
0/HDCP 2.2」対応が必須
4K HDRでの表示はHDMIの規格で「HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2」に対応した4Kテレビが必要があります。
4KテレビでHDCP 2.2に対応していない場合は4K HDR表示できないので注意しましょう。（2014年以降のリビング用の4Kテレビならほぼ対応し手織り2013年モデルが微妙なところらしい。）
例えば、仕事で使用しているDELLの4KモニターP2415Qは4K解像度に対応していますが、HDMIの規格がHDCP 1.4でフルHDとなっています。
（HDCP 1.4は4Kに対応していますがリフレッシュレートが30HzなのでPS4 Proとの接続ではフルHDの60Hzとなってしまうようです。）
HDMIの規格の種類
HDMIの規格はいくつか種類があり少し複雑でHDMI 2.0に対応していれば4K出力をすることができ、HDCP 2.2というのは著作権保護が強化された規格になっています。
- HDMI 1.4（HDCP 1.4）：4K（3,840 × 2,160）対応、30Hz対応
- HDMI 2.0（HDCP 2.2 ）YUV：4K（3,840 × 2,160）対応、60Hz対応
- HDMI 2.0（HDCP 2.2 ）RGB：4K（3,840 × 2,160）対応、60Hz対応、HDR対応
4Kテレビだから絶対に4K表示できるわけではなくPS4 Proを買う前に4KテレビがHDMI 2.0（HDCP 2.2）に対応してるか確認してからのほうがいいかもしれません。
ちなみに低価格4Kモニターで4K HDRに対応している4KモニターははLG 27インチ27UK600-Wというモデルで5万円くらいで購できるのでお得だと思います。
HDR対応4K表示にする方法（SONY 4K BRAVIA）
PS4 ProとSONYの4K BRAVIAでHDR対応の4K表示に対応するにはHDMIの信号フォーマトを変更する必要があります。テレビのリモコンから「ホーム」→「外部入力設定」→にアクセスし「HDMI信号フォーマット」を選択します。
HDMIの信号が「標準フォーマット」になっているので…
「拡張フォーマット」に変更します。
4K BRAVIA X8300DはHDMI2/3のみがHDRの4K表示に対応しているので、接続端子を確認しましょう。
「拡張フォーマット」に切り替えるとPS4 Proからの信号が切り替わり、先ほどの「映像出力情報」を確認してみると、解像度3,840 × 2,160（60Hz）、カラーフォーマットRGBに対応し4K HDRに対応したことがわかります。
以上でPS4 Proの性能をフルで発揮させることが可能となりました。なお、確認したところ東芝のREGZAも同様に「外部入力設定」の「HDMI HDR設定」の「通常モード」から「HDRモード」に切り替える必要があるようです。

HDRのON・OFFで画質がどう違うのか比較
HDRはハイダイナミックレンジ合成（High-dynamic-range rendering）の略で、明るさ情報（輝度）のレンジ幅を8bitから10bitに拡大する技術でカメラでも導入されているもので、HDRを有効で表現力が格段に向上します。（特に暗い場面の。）
ただし、HDRを有効にするには上でも説明しましたが条件が厳しいので注意です。
- 4K HDR対応テレビが必要（4K BRAVIAの場合は接続箇所が決まってる）
- PS4 Pro同梱のHDMIケーブル、またはプレムアムハイスピードHDMI（18Gbpsに対応）が必要
- ゲームタイトルがHDRに対応している必要がある
確認したところPS4（Slim）に付属していたHDMIケーブルでも4K HDRの出力できて、PS4 Pro同梱のHDMIケーブルとの違いがイマイチよくわかりません。旧PS4のHDMIケーブルが18Gbpsに対応していないのかも。
例としてHDRに対応しているHorizon Zero Dawnで冒頭の暗いシーンで比較してみます。こちらはHDRをOFFにした4K表画面です。
そして、こちらがHDRをONの4K表示画面です。
雰囲気がかなり違いますね。HDRをONにすると色合いがかなり控えめになりますが、その場の雰囲気の表現としてはとてもリアルなものになっているのではないでしょうか。
HDR OFFだと極端に暗いところや明るいところの表現が簡略化されているようにも見えます。水面や岩肌、暗がりの草の表現力は明らかにHDR ONの方がリアルに表現できていますよね。
実際にプレイしてみてHDRがONの状態の方が画面が見やすいですが、HDRがOFFだとコントラストが高いせいかチカチカし暗いところがどうなっているのか分かりにくいように思います。
なお、PS4でも2K画質でHDRを有効にすることができるのですが、個人的には4K画質でHDRを無効化した画面よりも、2K画質でHDRを有効にした方が綺麗に見えます。
以下の画像は2K画質（4Kテレビ側で4Kアップコンバート）でHDRを有効化させたものです。
4K画質でHDRを有効にしたものと区別がつかないくらいです。つまりPS4（Slim）で十分なんじゃないかと思ったり思わなかったり。別記事でも書いていますがPS4 Proの4KとPS4の2Kの見え方の違いはこんな感じです。
でも4Kテレビ側の4Kアップコンバート機能を使うことで近くに寄らないとその違いを判別することができないんですよね。

PS4 Proを購入してただ接続しても4K HDR表示にならないことが分かりました。
PS4 Proを4Kテレビで楽しむ方は必ずテレビ側のHDMIの設定を確認しましょうね。なぜ最初からHDMIの設定が拡張フォーマットになっていないのかが謎ですが、テレビのメーカーによってもそれは違うのかもしれません。
いずれにしてもPS4 Proで4KHDR表示させるときはテレビ側の設定を一度見てみる必要があるといえそうです。
