3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet was a digital table released in 1995 as part of the Microsoft Plus! upgrade package for Windows 95. It was later bundled with Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP 32-bit, after which it disappeared forever. Or did it?

Obviously, since you’re here, you already know that the answer is no, it did not. You can download the executable file from groovypost.com, run it, and within a few seconds have the game back on your PC. It’s exactly as it was, although it might look a little smaller than you recall: The window is locked at 640×480 resolution. (Remember, 1280×1024 was cutting-edge visual glory back then.)

The Windows-bundled freebie is a slightly-modified version of the Space Cadet table in Cinematronic’s Full Tilt! Pinball, which also included the pirate-themed Skullduggery and fantasy-themed Dragon’s Keep tables. That’s actually a big part of why Pinball was ultimately dropped from Windows, as Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen explained in a 2012 MSDN blog post .

«The 64-bit version of Pinball had a pretty nasty bug where the ball would simply pass through other objects like a ghost. In particular, when you started the game, the ball would be delivered to the launcher, and then it would slowly fall towards the bottom of the screen, through the plunger, and out the bottom of the table. Games tended to be really short,» he wrote.

«Two of us tried to debug the program to figure out what was going on, but given that this was code written several years earlier by an outside company, and that nobody at Microsoft ever understood how the code worked (much less still understood it), and that most of the code was completely uncommented, we simply couldn’t figure out why the collision detector was not working. Heck, we couldn’t even find the collision detector!»

And so, with «several million lines of code» remaining to be ported from the 32-bit version of Windows XP to the 64-bit edition, they decided to drop it—but not without lingering regrets. «If it makes you feel better, I am saddened by this as much as you are,» Chen admitted. «I really enjoyed playing that game.»

Some people might understandably be nervous about installing an unknown program downloaded from a site they’ve never heard of, but I have no such compunctions and I can attest to the fact that it works perfectly well, even on Windows 10. The only tricky bit is finding the thing after it’s installed, because it’s not listed under 3D or Space Cadet. Just look for «Pinball»—it’s in your games folder.

Modder has ported 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet to Android

Thanks to an open source project, it is now possible to play 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet on your Android phone without emulation.

You can find plenty of games in the Google Play Store, including several retro titles. Even if your favorite classic games aren’t readily available there, you can opt for emulators to play them on your Android device. In order to preserve the classic titles (and relive the childhood memories), some people have further taken the challenge of decompiling the game code so that they can be analyzed and played on modern platforms. This time, a developer has ported the classic 3D Pinball for Windows to a form that works on any Android device.

The Pinball game has a very special place in the hearts of veteran Windows users. Originally bundled with the Microsoft Plus! add-on for Windows 95, it was later included in every major Windows release till Windows XP. The Microsoft variant, aka «3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet» was ported from a pinball video game called «Full Tilt! Pinball,» published by Maxis. Although Microsoft doesn’t have any plan to bring back this gem, the modding community managed to reverse-engineer the game code into a human-readable form a while ago. After extracting the original game assets and pairing them with the decompiled code, a skilled developer can port the game to any platform. This is exactly what Federico Matteoni did for the Android version.

Matteoni, who also goes by fexed on GitHub, picked up the original Android port of Pinball by Iscle and patched it up to offer a ready-to-compile version of the port. The fixed version comes with several improvements over the initial port, and new options such as togglable tilt buttons. Defining a custom player name is possible as well.

Play Space Cadet 3D Pinball on Modern Windows PCs — Network Administration early versions of the Windows operating system, including Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows ME.

The game that was originally released as a single Full Tilt table! Pinball by Maxis is not officially available for new versions of Windows.

According to Wikipedia, the reason Microsoft didn’t include 3D Pinball Space Cadet in Vista or newer versions of Windows was a «collision detection bug» in the 64-bit version of the pinball game.

While this may very well be the reason, it may surprise you that the game runs great on modern Windows PCs. We tested 3D Pinball for Windows — Space Cadet on Windows 7 and Windows 10 PC and the game worked fine.

Pinball table available on various download portals. For your convenience, we have uploaded the latest version of the game to our server.

You can download the 3D Pinball Space Cadet game from the following link: 3d-pinball-space-cadet.zip

The game is fully compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. We tested it on Windows 7 and 10 and it worked fine with no issues. Please note that we do not support downloading in any form.

The game is presented as a zip file that must first be unzipped. To do this, you can right-click on the 3d-pinball-space-cadet.zip file and select the extract option displayed in the context menu, or use a third-party program like Bandizip or 7-zip to do this.

Then double-click the 3d_pinball.msi executable. This is the only file included in the archive. This will start the installation process of 3D Pinball for Windows — Space Cadet on your version of Windows.

Installation is easy. Note that you cannot select a custom installation directory. The game installs to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows NT\Pinball

You can select the «launch 3D Pinball» option at the last step of the installation, or launch it manually at any time from the directory.

The game is not added to the Windows Start menu during installation. You can add it to the start menu if you start Windows 10 as follows.

Open the 3D Pinball Space Cadet installation folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows NT\Pinball
Right-click the PINBALL.EXE file and select Pin to Top from the context menu.

3D Pinball for Windows — Space Cadet Gameplay

The pinball game was designed for Windows XP and it shows. The main problem you may encounter while playing the game is that it only supports 640×480 resolution.

You can’t resize the window, but you can run it in full screen mode, which I highly recommend. The reason for this is that a pinball table looks tiny on modern displays when you run it in windowed mode. If you run the game in full screen mode, it will be much better.

As for the controls, you can check the Options window > Player Controls. The game was not correctly displaying the correct flipper controls or the correct table strike on the systems I installed them on.

You can map the keys if they are not on your computer, or change them if you prefer to control the pinball table with different keys.

There are several missions in 3D Pinball Space Cadet, 17 missions in total, each with its own objectives. While you don’t have to complete any missions, they make the game more fun, going beyond the sole purpose of accumulating points.

Missions increase in rank and difficulty. You will find a complete list of all the missions available in Space Cadet on Gamefaqs.
