Pokémon 1st Edition Glurak (Charizard): Guide

What’s in a name? A 1999 Charizard is always going to be a high ticket item, no matter the language displayed on the front of the card.

Charizard was translated into German for their original Gen 1 base set, and Glurak roughly means ‘Ember Dragon’.

We’ve written about the best German Pokémon cards in the past. This time we’re specifically focusing on the most popular card from the set, as well as it’s potential as an investment piece.

How much is a Glurak worth, and should it be added to your personal collection?

  • As with the English set, this card was produced in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast, as part of a Base Set which featured 102 cards in total
  • Once again, Charizard/Glurak was the card everyone wanted, especially if it came with a 1st Edition stamp of approval as seen in the image below
  • English language cards are more popular than German, Italian or Japanese versions, hence a higher price tag for equivalent PSA copies
  • Glurak is still affordable when compared to the English Charizard card
  • Most sets that were released in English are also available in German (one or two sets were skipped), and German cards are still being printed in the latest Sword & Shield era
  • It has the same HP and attack damage across all versions
  • This means that German-language cards are recognized as tournament legal for Play! Pokémon

1999 Pokemon German Glurak Holo 1st Edition #4 (eBay)

The key to the original 1999 German Pokémon set, Glurak (Charizard) can be found in his original holo glory, surrounded by orange and yellow flames.

Expect to pay at least five figures for the best graded versions. This may be seen as a steal in a decade or so.

Put it this way. If you’re looking at gem mint copies, they were selling for roughly $1,500 as late as 2018. They leapt up to the $35,000 mark in 2020/21.

At the current time of writing, there are only 50 1st Edition PSA 10 copies, and 376 PSA 9s.

It offers a nostalgic hit for anyone who is old enough to remember the 1999 collection, and it sells for a fraction of the value compared to the English version of the card.

Pokémon 1st Edition Glurak (Charizard): Buying/Selling Advice

We really do like the look of Glurak. I think the card has true potential to rise as long as the Pokémon brand remains popular.

To that end, there always seems to be another collection of games and new content on the horizon. The Pokémon Company constantly aims to get its claws into the next round of fans who will cause their products to sell out in many stores.

We think that Glurak is one of the better base set Pokémon cards to invest in. Especially as a gem mint English version is likely to be out of reach for many collectors.

Would we buy Glurak? It’s essentially a quasi-Charizard, with the same look and vintage feel.

On the other hand, it’ll never be as good as the English card in terms of value or intrigue. The majority of investors and fans prefer the names they know and love.

Top 15 Pokémon cards, from Base Set 1999 to Crown Zenith —

By Evgen465 Reading 4 min Views 65 Published

Pokemon has released thousands of playing cards for the Pokemon TCG since 1996. , and we’ve rounded them up and ranked the top 15 Pokémon cards of all time.

Are you a collector, casual player or sports coach; Pokemon TCG has a lot to offer. And it’s one of the oldest deck-building card games, with thousands of cards ranging from useless cardboard rectangles to incredibly rare and expensive shiny collectibles. nine0005

But the card’s market value isn’t the only reason it’s worth collecting. And in recent additions, the illustrations of some Full Art and Secret Rare cards look much more attractive than thousands of dollars worth of 20-year-old cards.

Article continues after announcement

Some cards are in high demand due to their strength in combat or how they defined the meta during the TCG era. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the 15 best Pokemon cards of all time. nine0005

Contents

  1. Top 15 Pokemon Cards in the World
  2. 15. Illustrator Pikachu (Most Expensive Pokemon Card)
  3. 14. 1st Edition Charizard Shadowless Base Set (1999)

  5. 12. M Mewtwo EX (Highest Damage)
  6. 11. Arceus, Dialga, & Palkia GX (Cosmic Eclipse)
  7. 10. Gengar VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Fusion Strike)
  8. 9. Tyranitar V Complete Alt Art (Fighting Styles)
  9. 8. Mew VMAX Alternate Secret Art (Fusion Strike)

  11. 6. Origin Forme Palkia V Alternate Full Artwork (Astral Radiance)
  12. 5. Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Evolving Skies)
  13. 4. Regidrago V Alternate Full Art (Silver Tempest)
  14. 3. Deoxys VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Crown Zenith)
  15. 2. Giratina V Alternate Full Art (Lost Origin) ) nine0022
  16. 1. Creativity Trio & Arceus VSTAR Ultra Rare Alternative Arts (VSTAR Universe)

15. Illustrator Pikachu (most expensive Pokemon card)

Number 15 is the most expensive Pokemon card ever sold: Illustrator Pikachu. Compiling a list of the «best Pokémon cards» would be impossible without mentioning the one-of-a-kind PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu card, which the influencer Logan Paul spent $6 million to acquire. nine0005

Even outside the Gem Mint Illustrator ranking Pikachu is the rarest card in existence, with only 39 circulated after a series of competitions in the late 1990s.

14. 1st Edition Charizard Shadowless Base Set (1999)

Charizard’s first ever holographic card is considered the Michael Jordan card among Pokemon cards. It’s not very flashy by today’s standards, but many have hailed her as the greatest Pokémon card of all time. This is probably due to nostalgia and rarity, as well as being one of the most loved Pokémon. nine0005

Shadeless Charizard from the 1999 Pokemon Core Set sits low on this list because it’s not easy to get without hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even then, it’s arguably a pretty disappointing card. However, the hype around this card has earned it a place among the greatest of all time.

13. Shaymin EX Full Art (Pokémon Meta Card)

In each new era of the Pokemon TCG, several cards will turn heads to dominate the meta. However, in the era of the Roaring Sky, there was no such defining meta card as Shaymin EX. This allowed players to fill their hands with up to six cards at the time of play, thanks to the ability to give players plenty of options. nine0005

And the full-length version of the map is not bad either. It’s not as pretty or visually interesting as the cards further down the list, but the shape of the sky stands proudly against the blue background, instilling fear in the opposing trainer.

Article continues after announcement

12. M Mewtwo EX (Highest Damage)

Many instructors consider Mega Mewtwo EX from the X&Y BREAKthrough expansion to be one of them. one of the most powerful cards ever to grace a Pokémon TCG. This is thanks to the incredibly powerful Psychic Infinity move. nine0005

This attack deals 10 damage plus an additional 30 damage multiplied by the amount of energy you and your opponent have applied to their active Pokémon. And what’s worse (for your opponents), the damage dealt is not affected by Weakness. With the right amount of energy, M Mewtwo EX could solo teams in no time.

11. Arceus, Dialga, & Palkia GX (Cosmic Eclipse)

The Sun & Moon expansions offered quite a few «Team Up» cards that featured two or more Pokémon on the same card. Not only in the artwork, but the card itself actually featured two Pokémon, leading to some really interesting combos and incredible images. nine0005

Article continues after announcement

But one of the greatest cards to come out of this era of teamwork appeared in the final version of the Sun & the Moon set a cosmic eclipse. Arceus, Dialga, & trio map Palkia GX features the gods of the Pokémon universe. And while this Pokemon card wasn’t the dominant power players would expect from a trinity of gods, it’s still one of the best Sun & Lunar team cards.

10. Gengar VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Fusion Strike)

You may notice that the top 10 on this list all belong to Sword & Shield Age in the Pokémon TCG and beyond, and this is no mistake. Since the start of 2020, The Pokemon Company has been releasing some of the highest quality cards to date, and each pack contains some amazing collectibles.

To kick off the top 10, we have the Gengard VMAX secret alternate pattern from the Fusion Strike set. This card is not only beautifully illustrated, but also deals devastating damage. Unsurprisingly, this card costs just under $200, making it the most expensive Pokemon card in the Fusion Strike set. nine0005

9.

Tyranitar V Full Alternate Art (Fighting Styles)

Tyranitar is one of the most intimidating Pokémon outside of the TCG, and it shows its fair share of play in competitive card game as well. However, his Battle Styles alt card with full illustration shows another side of the gentle giant.

Slumbering amid a pile of rubbish and dirty dishes, this slumbering behemoth quickly became one of the most popular cards in the set. But this powerful Pokémon card also had a huge hit, capable of dealing massive damage in one hit at the expense of multiple cards. nine0005

8. Alternative Art Secret Mew VMAX (Fusion Strike)

Another stop in Fusion Strike land. The Mew VMAX Secret Alternate Artwork is a stunning card both visually and in terms of its features. This should not be confused with the five other Mew cards in the set, one of which arguably has the best alternate art.

The

Mew VMAX features two of the most ridiculous moves in TCG. Cross Fusion Strike allows Mew to select one move from the Fusion Strike Pokémon on the trainer’s bench and use it as his own. And Max Miracle deals 130 damage, which is not affected by any effects of the opponent’s active Pokémon. It may not be the most expensive card, but it must be reckoned with. nine0005

You can purchase Fusion Strike packs here (via Amazon).

7. Charizard VSTAR (Ultra Premium Collector Box Promo)/Mewtwo VSTAR (Crown Zenith)

Here’s a Charizard that feels worthy of a place on any «best Pokémon map». » list. Charizard VSTAR tells the phenomenal story of one of the world’s most beloved Pokémon as it fights against the strongest of Pokémon. This battle can also be seen from Mewtwo’s point of view in the new Crown Zenith set. nineThe 0005

Mewtwo VSTAR is the more attractive of the two, but its rarity makes it quite difficult to purchase and more expensive to purchase than the Charizard VSTAR. Collectors can pay $119 for the Charizard Ultra Premium Collector’s Box to get three incredible Charizard cards, or they can purchase the VSTAR separately for around $20.

6. Origin Forme Palkia V Alternate Full Artwork (Astral Radiance)

The Origin Forme Palkia V art card is one of many recent cards that take the focus away from the Pokémon on display to showcase incredible artwork. This 2.4″ x 3.4″ masterpiece is more suitable for a framed poster or a full page art book. Origin Forme Palkia fits in perfectly with the best Pokémon cards in recent history. nine0005

This card has a classy design and is a great way to introduce a new Pokémon (or, in this case, a new form) to the TCG. And his Hydro Break attack deals a staggering 200 damage at the cost of not being able to attack on the next turn.

Hunt for this piece of art by purchasing Astral Radiance packs here (via Amazon).

5. Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Evolving Skies)

One of the most requested cards at the peak of online popularity of the Pokémon TCG was the Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art Secret. A giant Eeveelution sits atop a building reaching for the moon in one of the most poetic pieces of art to appear in TCG Pokemon. This is the best Pokemon card in Evolving Skies.
nine0006 And for those who are brave enough to take this wonderful card for a walk around the battlefield, its ability and attack are rather unpleasant. Dark Signal allows the player to change the opponent’s active player to another one on his bench, and Max Darkness can deal a massive 160 damage.

It’s not too late to go after Umbreon by purchasing Evolving Skies sets here (via Amazon).

4. Regidrago V Alternate Full Art (Silver Tempest)

At the time of writing, the Silver Tempest expansion for Pokemon TCG has yet to be released, but we’ve already been given a glimpse of one of the alternate art cards that players have in store. Regidrago V easily ranks at the top of this list. Once again, the ferocious Legendary Pokémon is depicted in a serene setting, simply lounging among the ruins, with the legendary bird Lugia soaring in the background. nine0005

And, as usual, the most decadent cards are adorned with some of the best abilities. Sky Roar causes the player to discard the top three cards from their deck, but if any of those three cards are energy, they are automatically attached to the Regidrago. And a move like the Dragon Laser… that speaks for itself.

Unleash the Regidrago by purchasing Silver Tempest Packs here (via Amazon).

3.

Deoxys VMAX Alternate Art Secret (Crown Zenith)

nine0006 Looking at the entire lineup of alternate artwork from the Crown Zenith set, it’s incredibly difficult to limit the number of cards from that set on this list. There are at least 10 cards from Crown Zenith that could easily make this list. But there is one card that stands above the rest, and it is not of this world.

Deoxys VMAX Alternate Art Secret is the best Pokémon card in the Crown Zenith set. Orbitle abducts an extraterrestrial Pokémon in a backdrop that looks like a psychedelic sci-fi movie. It’s great. It’s amazing. And it’s worth it. nine0005

2. Giratina V Alternate Full Art (Lost Origin)

I mean, look at this thing. It wouldn’t be surprising if players were in the midst of the greatest era of Pokémon card designs after seeing what the latest set, Lost Origins, has to offer. The Giratina V alternate full cover is without a doubt the best Pokémon card ever printed. You could call Giratina V Ferrari of Pokemon cards.

Is this the strongest card? No, but he has an incredible kit that turns the god of antimatter into a formidable enemy. Abyss Seeker allows the player to look at the top four cards of their deck and keep two in their hand, while Shred is a fairly obvious move that does 160 full damage. nine0005

Start your search for Giratina by purchasing Lost Origin kits here (via Amazon).

1. Creativity Trio & Arceus VSTAR Ultra Rare Alternative Arts (VSTAR Universe)

After the alternative full image of Giratina V was revealed, we didn’t expect it to be dethroned so soon. But as more cards are revealed for the upcoming VSTAR Universe set, the top spot now belongs to not one, but four cards. nine0005

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to hold a beautiful work of art in your hand, look no further. The Origin Forme Palkie, Origin Forme Dialga, Giratina, and Arceus VSTAR Ultra Rare cards from the VSTAR Universe are the most gorgeous Pokemon cards ever printed. It’s almost like you’re looking at renaissance paintings that belong to a museum.

These are also the last four cards released during Sword & The Age of Shield is in the Pokemon TCG, and they’re the perfect way to end a breathtaking series of cards. nine0005

Find these four cards by purchasing Crown Zenith sets here (via Amazon).

Most Valuable Pokemon Cards of All Time

Honorable Mention: Raichu Preview

Sold for: ???

This card can easily be considered record number one because there is no price for it. There are no more than 10 preliminary Raichu cards, but there is no real idea of what condition they are in. Maps are kind of a myth and there is no real evidence for their existence. The story behind them is that they were accidentally printed by the then-distributor of the Pokémon TCG, Wizards of the Coast, and given to a select few employees. nine0005

Supposedly a way to distinguish this card from any other Raichu card is the «PRE-RELEASE» printed in the lower right corner of the monster’s image, but neither card has ever been offered for sale and Wizards of the Coast deny their existence. A staffer reportedly showed an image of the card in 2006, but some question its authenticity. If you look on the internet, some websites list it at $10,000. However, given the small amount available and how some refer to it as the «Holy Grail» of collectible cards, we wouldn’t say you can appreciate the real value of this card until it’s up for sale and purchased with legitimate grounds.p>

10. Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind

Sold for: $65,100

As you’ll see on several other occasions on this list, cards that were given to finalists in certain tournaments as trophies will do a lot of good years later . This one was awarded to the 12 finalists of the 50-man tournament held in Hawaii.

9.

Tamamushi University Magiccarp

Sold for: $66,100

Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of Pokémon knows about the most useless monster, Magikarp. Usually the only move he knows is «Splash» when he sees him spin and do nothing. Having it in your party is basically a hindrance until you evolve it into Gyarados, so seeing a card with the art of firing a powerful beam of energy is unique and interesting. This special Magikarp card was a promotional card that had minimal distribution in the Japanese tournament at the end of 1990s, and participants could only get it by passing a special test in a magazine. There are no more than 100 of these cards left in the game.

8. Trainer #1 Super Secret Battle of 1999

Sold for: $90,000

As the name suggests, this card had a whole secret flair for it. The participants first had to win regional tournaments, and then these people were sent to a secret place where the final was held. It was this card that gave them access to this battle. It is assumed that there are seven of them, with six of them getting a perfect 10 rating. nine0005

7. Coach #2 at the 2006 World Championship

Sold for $110,100 history: only three cards are known to exist. Only one of these three has been seen in public and valued at over $110,000. Three people who received this card became the finalists of this tournament and received instant access to the next year’s World Championship. nine0005

6. Neo Genesis First Edition Holographic Lugia

Sold for: $144,310

Lugia is one of the most popular Legendary Pokémon of all time, but the circumstances surrounding this card set make it so valuable. When the first edition was made, there were several errors and typographical errors that resulted in a total of 44 cards on this card that are in good enough condition to receive a perfect score of 10. If you have one of these highly rated cards, you are looking at a card that is sure to become more valuable in the future. nine0005

5. Kangaskhan Parent-Child Promo Card

Sold for: US$150,100

This card was given to the winners of the 1998 Parent-Child Team Fighting Tournament in Japan. If the duo won enough games, they received this card with the original Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game logo on the back, a symbol reserved for the rarest cards. There are supposedly 46 in total, but since 1998 only three have been seen in the wild. nine0005

4. Black Star Ishihara signed a GX promo card

Sold for: $247,230

Tsunekazu Ishihara is the founder and current president of the Pokémon Company. To help celebrate his 60th birthday in 2017, this postcard was made and given to the staff, but this particular postcard was signed by a man. It features Master Ball and Rotom and is wearing a red jacket, which is a Japanese tradition for someone’s 60th birthday. It is believed that the color red brings good luck and prosperity, drives away demons and means some kind of rebirth. nine0005

3. Backless Blastoise

Sold for: 360,000

This is a unique Blastoise card that was never released to the public. It’s backless because it was part of a test run of Pokémon cards made in 1998. Wizards of the Coast made them in an attempt to convince Nintendo to allow them to release a collectible card game in English.

Since this is a test card, there is no image on the back of the card and there are only two of them. However, the one that sold for $360,000 in 2021 is the only one that has been spotted. The whereabouts and condition of the other is currently unknown. nine0005

2. Shadowless Holographic Charizard, First Edition

Sold for: $420,000

Since the introduction of Pokémon, Charizard has been one of the most popular monsters in the series. When you were a child, if you had a Charizard holographic card, you were a legend on the playground. Currently, if you have one, you can get up to $100 for it. Not so bad.
