Unlike when you purchase a pack and it automatically gets added to your launch screen, mods can take a bit more work to get going. Once you’ve learned the process, however, you’ll find that modifying your Sims experience is worth the extra legwork. 

Download a mod of your choice into your Downloads folder. You can find mods from The Sims Resource and various smaller creators’ websites or Patreon pages as well. Make sure that the mods that you install are from trusted sources,  like the ones we’ve suggested below, so you don’t download anything potentially harmful. Once downloaded, open your Downloads folder and unzip your mod by left-clicking it and selecting ‘Extract’. 

Navigate to your documents folder in a new window, click on ‘Electronic Arts’, then ‘The Sims 4’, then ‘Mods’, which should showcase a folder with all of your mods in it. Drag all of your extracted files from this mod into your mod folder. 

Restart The Sims 4 so that your new mods are launched along with the game. There should be a pop-up when you load the game up, which will showcase all of the mods and custom content you currently have running on your game. You can disable this pop-up, but it might be useful when it comes to double-checking that your mods work and will show up in the game. You can see your mods in-game by left-clicking on your selected sim, which will then showcase any mods and mod options applicable. 

You need to enable mods before you can use them! This can be done from The Sims 4 Launch menu. Select the Options menu from the in-game menu, then click on ‘Game options’ and ‘Other’ in the left-hand toolbar. In ‘Other’, you will want to check the boxes next to ‘Script mods allowed’ and ‘Enable custom content and mods’. Without checking these boxes, mods won’t show up or work.

You have probably already seen that on our site there are files with mods stored in archives in the formats rar , zip or 7z . This is due to the fact that:

  1. When compressed into archivers, mods weigh less.
  2. The archive may contain several files with mods at once.

Therefore, to install such mods, you first need to unzip them. To do this, you need archivers, for example:

  • WinRaR ;
  • 7-Zip ;
  • Or the built-in archiver in Windows.

How to install character mods?

Sims mod files for Sims 4 are slightly different from the above mods, and so is the installation process. After downloading the selected sims you need:

  1. Unpack if the downloaded files with mods are in the archive.
  2. Check for the presence of all required five mods with extensions:
  • « .hhi » — 2 pcs.;
  • « .trayitem «;
  • « .householdbinary «;
  • and «.sgi «.
  1. Drag and drop these files into the « Tray » directory located in « Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 «.
  2. Mod files installed.

Who hasn’t heard of SIMS games? This unique life simulator, the first part of which was released almost 20 years ago, is still bought and sold by a huge number of fans and new players. Part 4 is the latest release to date.

Initially, the game was conceived as a real life simulator, but the add-ons that came out already for the first part violated this rule — what is one Makin’ Magic worth with its magic tournaments. The remaining parts were also supplemented, the graphics changed, new items and opportunities appeared in an effort to make the characters and their lives as close to real as possible. This became a fertile ground for the creativity of the players, who began to independently create details that complement the game as they wish. Here we will talk about how to install mods on Sims 4.

Instructions on how to install mods on the Sims 4

In fact, installing mods on the Sims 4 is as easy as shelling pears. In most cases, they are already on the Internet in the correct format, so the player only has to do:

  1. Download add-on.
  2. Find the Mods folder in the game files (Figure 2).
  3. Move the downloaded archive there without unpacking it.
  4. Allow the use of scripted mods in the Sims settings.

In order for add-ons to work, you need to install them not during the game, otherwise the changes will not be saved. There are several other scenarios for installing mods on Sims 4, about them in the following sections.

What mods do in the game

If you start answering this question in detail, you can immerse yourself in it for a long time, because add-ons are released for any part of the game. As an example, mods can:

  1. Change the architecture.
  2. Change weather conditions.
  3. Add any new items.
  4. Improve the personality of the characters with additions to the character creation mode. You can get everything — from clothes and hairstyles to, for example, moles, scars, etc. (Figure 3).
  5. Add new buildings and entire locations to develop your own city. There are a number of mods that add cities with the sights of the «capitals of the world» — Paris, New York, etc.
  6. Get additional options in the control menu.

Summing up the above, some additions are needed to make the game as close to reality as possible, and some only further away from it. But there are additions that fit both themes and themes, for example, the Sims 4 Whicked Whims mod.

It is considered one of the most popular, and its features are easy to describe — The Sims are rated 12-16+ in different countries due to the moderate sex scenes. This mod raises the bar to 18+.

General recommendations for installation

Installing add-ons on any game, and even more so on such a large-scale one as The Sims 4, requires attention to detail. Here are some details that are especially worth paying attention to:

  1. Only download add-ons from trusted sources.
  2. Reading the description before downloading the mod is also a must. The Sims version may not be suitable or there may be a conflict with other mods.
  3. The installation instructions must be followed exactly, because violation of them will lead to game malfunctions.
  4. Before installation, it is advisable to make a backup copy of the last save in order to start from it in case of errors.
  5. When installing several Sims 4 mods, it is better to do it one by one, checking the Sims 4 performance after each one in order to catch errors in time.
  6. Files with the extension «.pyo», «.py» are not unpacked from the archive before being sent to the Mods folder. Files «.package» are unpacked necessarily.
  7. Sometimes there are mods that need to be thrown into the «Unpackedmod» folder created in Mods.
  8. For reliability, it is allowed to throw off add-ons in unpacked and packed form. The game will choose which one it needs.
  9. To manage mods, you can download a special command center.

The last thing to say here is the path to the Mods folder. Many players, both licensed and pirated Sims 4, are faced with the problem that they do not have a Mods folder. They try to create it themselves, but, at best, nothing happens, and at worst, you have to reinstall The Sims 4, and this is a time-consuming process. We also recommend checking the mod files with an antivirus, such as Avast.

Note : The Mods folder must be looked for not in the root folder where the Sims is installed, through My Documents, in Electronic Arts / The Sims 4. In the same folder, for example, all screenshots and videos taken during the game are stored.

How to Install Package Files

.package add-ons are a big boon for players as these files are the easiest to install in The Sims 4 and the chance of failure is minimal. To put them in Sims, you need:

  1. Download and check for viruses.
  2. Unpack zip or rar archive if the file is in it. This applies to mods in .package or .ts4script format.
  3. Place in the Mods folder searched for in My Documents. You cannot create this folder yourself, but the game recognizes those created inside it. So additional files can be sorted. Thus, we set the objects (Figure 4).
  4. All installed objects will be added to The Sims automatically.

It remains only to check their presence in the list of mods in the settings, or in the mode of creating a character, buying, building, depending on what was downloaded. You can download the necessary archivers, for example WinZip, on our website.

Installing characters and houses

Installing a character into the game is more difficult than some static item with a limited set of functions. Therefore, here you need to read the instructions before installation, so that everything works correctly. And the action algorithm looks like this:0003

  1. Downloading a zip, rar archive with the desired character.
  2. In the archive with the character, there are usually not one, but several folders that need to be put in the Sims 4 folder, not Mods.
  3. The contents of each folder must go into its own section, so this needs to be checked later.
  4. New characters should appear in the gallery, in «My Library», which is opened through the Client.
  5. There they can be loaded into the game.
  6. Make sure to run Sims 4 after installation to see if installation worked.

In addition to adding new characters, which most often turn out to be well-made celebrity models, new houses and community lots can also be added.

Players’ fantasy in character creation mode is quite limited by the game itself, but when building houses there is room for expansion. Therefore, architectural diversity can be wide (Figure 5). To establish a new residential or community lot, you need:

  1. Download the archive with the building.
  2. We read the installation instructions, as cheats may be needed.
  3. The contents of the archive are extracted to the Tray folder in My Documents. You do not need to install in Mods at home. However, you need to install those additions that are associated with changes in the game location, for example, the Beyond the veil lighting mod.
  4. The Sims 4 checks for new objects in the Library after starting.
  5. From there you can install mods in Sims.

The last step for these algorithms is the same — Sims 4 is loaded and checked for lags.

Order of activation of mods

Sometimes mods are not immediately recognized by the game. This is due to the fact that the Sims 4 initially disabled the ability to use unofficial add-ons, which can violate both the security and stability of the game. Therefore, you will have to dig into the settings, and the mod activation algorithm will be as follows:

  1. Before installing the add-on, a backup copy of the last save is created in case of problems.
  2. The archive with the mod is downloaded in rar or zip format.
  3. The file is being installed.
  4. The game starts normally.
  5. After you need to run Sims 4 in the opened client. If the mod is installed incorrectly, errors may appear already here.
  6. When the game has loaded, you need to go to the settings.
  7. Other tab (Figure 6).
  8. Check the box for adding script mods and user content.
  9. Confirm changes.
  10. Go to the main menu.
  11. Launch gallery.
  12. Go to «My Library».
  13. Mark the addition of new materials (the item will be on the left).
  14. The list will include all the mods that Sims recognizes. It remains to mark those that need to be included.

After this add-ons will start working. This is the standard activation path and the only one.

Possible risks and conflicts with the game

When installing mods, you cannot be sure that everything will go smoothly. Therefore, unofficial improvements for Sims 4 are installed only at the player’s own risk. There may be such problems:

  1. The mod did not install correctly, because it was made poorly or unfinished. Therefore, it is worth reading user reviews. The same thing happens when the add-on is not completely downloaded to disk.
  2. Mods installed on the same game object can conflict with each other, so you should be careful when installing, for example, mods that change settings or add new locations.
  3. The add-on does not work or gives an error because it is not installed correctly. Therefore, all instructions of the creator of the mod must be followed.
  4. Infection with viruses due to downloading an add-on from an unverified source.
  5. The mod does not function, giving an error, because the installation requires the latest version of Sims 4 or some add-on (sometimes all). This is noted in the description.

Installing mods for Sims 4 is as easy as for previous versions of the game, as the developers themselves do everything to make it easy to create add-ons.
