Ranking Every Pokemon Game On Nintendo Switch

The Pokemon series has made its mark across almost every Nintendo console from the Game Boy to the 3DS, and the Nintendo Switch is no different. The system has a range of main series titles and spin-off games for you to sink your teeth into, so when it comes to the Switch, you’re never really left wanting when it comes to Pokemon content.

Related: The File Size Of Every Core Pokemon Game

However, with such choice available to you, there also comes the question of which games are worth your time. Whether you’re a seasoned Pokemon trainer or entering the fray of Pokemon battles for the very first time, deciding which game to dive into next can be difficult, and it also depends on whether you’re searching for the classic Pokemon adventure, or something a little different in the wide and wonderful world of Pokemon. While there are more Pokemon titles available on Nintendo Switch Online, we’re sticking to official releases for this one.

Updated November 29th, 2022: The release of Scarlet and Violet means that there’s yet another Pokemon generation to add to the Nintendo Switch’s roster. With that being the case, we thought it was time to update this list to include the latest entry, and see where it falls among its predecessors.

11/11 Pokken Tournament DX

The first-ever Pokemon title on the switch, Pokken Tournament DX takes inspiration from the Tekken series (if you couldn’t already guess by the name) and is an arcade-style fighting game. Though it was a port of a Wii U title, the Switch version added a few more Pokemon that you could fight as, including Darkrai and Scizor.

The Switch version didn’t add much else though, other than the slightly crisper graphics, and the fact that you could play the game anywhere without having to lug the heavy Wii U gamepad around.

10/11 Pokemon Quest

Move over pixel sprites and 3D models — Pokemon are cubed now. In Pokemon Quest, you can explore Tumblecube Island, where your main goal is to search for loot. Go back to your base camp to use your loot and cook up dishes to attract new Pokemon for your expedition team.

Plus, you can even decorate your base camp if you want to, and who doesn’t love a bit of personalization? Cute, fun and rewarding, Pokemon Quest is a laid-back game that you can return to whenever you want a little Pokemon in your life.

9/11 Pokemon Cafe ReMix

Originally called Pokemon Cafe Mix, this game allows you to run a cafe where you can serve treats to Pokemon. You can even hire Pokemon to work alongside you in the cafe after you’ve served them enough times. Sounds cute, right?

Related: Pokemon Cafe Mix: Tips For Recruiting Cafe Staff

If you’re lucky enough, a Shiny Pokemon might even wander into your cafe, giving you even more incentive to keep serving up those treats. Even if the thought of customer service gives you nightmares in real life, Pokemon Cafe ReMix is sweet puzzle game that’s worth a try.

8/11 Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Remakes of the 2006 games Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, this pair of games was long-awaited for fans of the Sinnoh region. Like many remakes, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl swapped out the original’s traditional pixel art style for 3D graphics, shrinking Dawn, Lucas, and many other Sinnoh favorites into chibi size.

While much of the original adventure remained the same, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl also introduced some new features, such as the areas in the Grand Underground where you can meet various Pokemon. However, with some of the questionable choices made in the original games sticking around for the remakes, it makes you wonder why the Pokemon Company didn’t decide to include the improvements made in Pokemon Platinum.

7/11 New Pokemon Snap

A sequel to the beloved 1999 game Pokemon Snap, New Pokemon Snap follows much of the same tones of the original. Explore Pokemon in their natural habitats (rather than just in the tall grass) and snap photos of them. Any old photo won’t do, though — to progress, you’ll need to photograph different Pokemon behaviors.

The nature of New Pokemon Snap lets you see Pokemon in a way you’ve never seen them before. That itself makes the game charming enough to play, but the possibility of snapping photos of mythical Pokemon, like Mew, makes it all the more intriguing.

6/11 Pokemon Unite

Looking for a different way to battle Pokemon? Pokemon Unite has you covered. In this free-to-play Switch and mobile game, you play in a team of five against another five-player team, aiming to score the most points by defeating wild Pokemon, leveling up your own Pokemon, and defeating Pokemon on the opposing team.

Related: The Best Holowear Skins In Pokemon Unite

Teamwork is key in this game, as you’ll have to work in synergy with the other four players on your team, which is pretty much a first for the Pokemon series as a whole. You can even style up your Pokemon in holographic outfits known as Holowear, adding an element of customization to your play, too.

5/11 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX

If you missed out on the gems that are Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team on the Nintendo DS back in 2005, you can experience the adventure with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX. As a remake, it’s a combination of the two games, all revamped with a high-definition, watercolour-like art style that’s just as charming as the original.

The game itself sees you turned into a Pokemon (after completing a quiz to find out which Pokemon your personality matches, of course) and building your own rescue team. As the name suggests, you explore mysterious dungeons that can change every time you enter them. If you’re itching for a bit of Pokemon, but want something a little different to the usual song and dance, Mystery Dungeon is the way to go.

4/11 Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the series’ first true foray into the open-world genre. You can choose where to go, whenever you want, following three different storylines in the region of Paldea. There are plenty of new and returning Pokemon to catch, giving you all the more reason to explore the region to its fullest.

Despite this, the game suffers from graphical limitations, leading to bugs and glitches that hinder the overall experience. Perhaps Pokemon’s ambitions were too high, and the development time too short. With more polish, Scarlet and Violet certainly could have been the greatest Pokemon games to date, but that sadly isn’t quite the case.

3/11 Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee & Let’s Go Pikachu

Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Let’s Go Pikachu were the first mainline Pokemon games to arrive on the Nintendo Switch, and as remakes of the iconic Kanto region that take elements from the ever-popular Pokemon Go, it only makes sense that they were.

Depending on whether you pick Let’s Go Eevee or Let’s Go Pikachu, you can have a special Eevee or Pikachu as your partner in this adventure, and you can even dress them up in adorable accessories. Pokemon also appear in the overworld in these games — a series first when the games were released. Whether it’s your first time in Kanto or you’ve visited it plenty of times before, the Let’s Go games are a great way to experience the region.

2/11 Pokemon Sword & Shield

Pokemon Sword and Shield took us into Generation 8 and introduced us to the region of Galar, taking inspiration from Great Britain. There were over 80 new Pokemon to meet, including the Pseudo-legendary Dragapult and the hauntingly adorable Polteageist.

Related: Pokemon Sword & Shield: The Best Pokemon For Catching Other Pokemon

The games also debuted Max Raid battles, where you can team up with other players (or NPCs) to defeat and catch Dynamaxed Pokemon in the Wild Area. While the graphics didn’t quite rise to the heights of other first-party games on the Switch, Sword and Shield were still a fun foray into a new region with exciting multiplayer features.

By the time Pokemon Legends: Arceus came out, the Pokemon formula had been in need of a shake-up for a while. Thankfully, Legends: Arceus delivered on this front, and seems to have been a game changer for the series. It lets you explore vast landscapes and see Pokemon in their natural habitats (and dodge their attacks if they spot you, too).

Set in the Hisui region before it came to be known as Sinnoh, this game sees you sent back in time by the legendary Pokemon, Arceus. When you arrive, you have nothing on your back but your pyjamas. What else is there to do but catch every Pokemon possible? Legends: Arceus is unlike any other Pokemon game in the series, and for all the right reasons.

Why you can trust iMore
Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

I’ve been a Pokémon fan since I first got my hands on Red and Blue in elementary school. Whether you’re a new Pokémon enthusiast or a veteran like me, there’s so much for you to enjoy as these are some of the best Nintendo Switch games. Anyone excited about upcoming games should preorder Scarlet and Violet. This will be the first open-world game for the franchise, and it’s sure to be an exciting title.

If I had to recommend only one game, it would have to be either Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. These Gen 8 games are the third-highest-selling Pokémon games after Red and Blue and Gold and Silver. Plus, they introduce the Wild Area, sections of the map where Pokémon can be seen walking around in the overworld. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can even jump into Max Raid Dens and catch Pokémon with others online.

For anyone who was a huge fan of the original RPGs, I cannot recommend Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! enough. You get to explore the Kanto region in an all-new adventure with either a special Pikachu or a special Eevee at your side. You’ll take down Team Rocket, explore the original eight gyms, and can even see Pokémon wandering around in the overworld. Note that fighting is mostly removed from wild Pokémon battles and reserved for trainer or gym battles instead.

Whether you’ve played only one Pokémon game or you’ve played several, every serious Pokémon trainer should definitely use Pokémon HOME. The free service allows you to store up to only 30 Pokémon, but if you pay for the Premium subscription, you can store up to 6,000 from several different games and can trade with other trainers as well. It’s the perfect way to flush out your Pokédex or get super rare Pokémon you might have missed before.

Best Pokemon Nintendo Switch Games Ranking

1342

The world of Pokemon is always a great place to spend a day with, and while we all want it to be real, it’s best to play games on the Nintendo Switch. The best Pokemon Nintendo Switch games exude the personality of the series and bring in a unique charm that other franchises would love to have. Pick-t-this list and soon you will find yourself on a journey of Pokémon. nine0007

Featured: Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu

Image courtesy of Nintendo and The Pokemon Company

Although this game is one of the most controversial games in the Pokemon series due to its use of Go-like mechanics, this semi-remake of Red and Blue still has a lot to love. It has a cute chibi art style that will melt your heart, and for any first generation fan, they’ll be enchanted by the familiar but completely redone cities they grew up in. A beautiful rendition of classic beat songs from the Game Boy era will give you goosebumps as they are wonderfully remastered. Throw in the ability to see all the Pokémon in the field, standard (but fun) battles, and a story that takes place after the opening games, and you’ve got a ticket to SS Awesome. nine0007

2) Pokémon sword and shield

Bringing the typically handheld main series to consoles for the first time is no easy task, but Game Freak has put in a worthy effort with Sun & Moon. Yes, it doesn’t have all the Pokémon from the past series, but that’s okay with a generation of Pokémon that feels unique to the Galar region (United Kingdom). The game was really inspired by the United Kingdom as the battles took place in large arenas similar to football games across the country. As a Brit, I liked the different references. nine0007

Pokemon Sun & Moon’s new open fields got developer Game Freak immersed in what a big open-world RPG based on the series should have been. It’s a tantalizing taste of what was to come, as there was a lot to be found if you looked deep enough.

In addition, the legendary characters have an amazing design: one has a sword and the other has a shield. Their attacks are cool, like many other Pokémon in the game. This may be disappointing to some, but Sword & Shield is a great stepping stone towards the future of the series. Oh, and did we mention that you can make your Pokémon giant? This is a great feature. nine0007

3) Pokemon Unite

Pokemon Unite was a game, fans were divided with its revealing trailer, but with the release of the game in July 2021, the dissuaders were silenced. Pokemon Unite is an incredibly addicting MOBA game that brings your favorite pocket monsters back into action. Pikachu, Charizard, Snorlax and many more joined the fight. Each one offers a unique set of moves to master, and the game is exceptionally fun as you try to get more points than the other team. nine0007

In the game, you must capture zones in order to score points, and you can do this by destroying CPU-controlled Pokémon around the map or destroying competitors. You will have a variety of strategies and may need to team up with your squad of three or five to take down raid bosses in a specific area on the map, such as the legendary bird Zapdos or Roth. Oh, and it’s free, but it comes at a cost to pay a little to win. Although it’s not as big as the mainstream RPG series, you’ll be playing it for hours on your Nintendo Switch. nine0007

4) New Pokemon Snap

Screenshot by Gamepur

Fans have been waiting for the sequel to Pokemon Snap since the Nintendo 64, and finally they got it in New Pokemon Snap. With stunning visuals, you take on the role of a photographer, chronicling each Pokémon’s behavior in picturesque locations. It’s kind of fun to watch these pocket monsters interact with the environment and each other in unique ways. We’re trying not to sound corny, but it really feels like stepping into the world of Pokémon with its first-person perspective. The goal of the game is to take the most accurate photographs that the professor might be interested in. At the end, he will earn you points for your photographic skills. nine0007

You’ll be exploring the same areas over and over again, but developer Bandai Namco could add a few twists to help keep New Pokemon Snap fresh. You won’t be able to catch every Pokémon in one pass. We liked the game, so you should try the game if you haven’t already.

5) Pokken Tournament DX

Image via Nintendo

Pokémon have made their way into many game genres, and fighting games are definitely one of them. Originally released on Wii U but also on Nintendo Switch, Pokken Tournament combines elements of the popular Tekken series with our favorite pocket monsters. Like New Pokemon Snap, this game features a vibrant graphic style and amazing attacks that will make you wish the main series looked better than it did in the past. Fans of fighting games and Pokémon would love Pokken Tournament as the roster of available fighters has different movesets to confuse your opponents. Give it a chance. nine0007
