Die PS4-Highlights im Jahr 2022 vorgestellt

God of War 2: Ragnarok

1:02

  • Genre: Action
  • Plattform: PS5, PS4

Hogwarts Legacy

2:40

  • Genre: RPG
  • Plattform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

What you need to know about porting games to the console — Gamedev to DTF

The founder of the Mandragora studio tells.

For many indie developers, consoles remain uncharted territory. While releasing a game on Steam is relatively straightforward and straightforward, releasing on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch is fraught with both bureaucratic and technical hurdles.

We talked to Evgeny Kisterev, the founder of the Mandragora studio, which released its SKYHILL bagel on Switch on February 26th. He told what to prepare for those who want to release their titles on the console.

Let’s say I made a game for PC, and after a couple of years I decided it would be nice to port it to consoles. Will I have any problems when transferring the game to another platform? Do I need to think about a potential port during development?

It is impossible to think about a port without previous experience. But some things can still be foreseen. First of all, I would make sure that the resources of the game are loaded asynchronously and the game never freezes on one frame for more than a second, even during the loading of locations.

If your game is made on Unity, then, of course, you will have to switch to one of the latest versions of the engine. Very often there is no problem with this. Naturally, the game should ideally support gamepad control in all GUIs and mechanics.

For SKYHILL, we had to completely redesign the controls, redraw the interfaces for gamepad control. Also during the creation of floors, our game «hung» for a few seconds before starting to load. I had to rewrite the content generation mechanism so that only one floor was generated per frame. Because of this, the loading of the game has doubled in time, but it has become more secure.

SKYHILL

I want to release my game on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch right away. Do I need to contact platform holders? What information will they require from me?

Well, firstly, to develop for any console, you need a devkit that you can’t buy in a regular store. The first step is to become an official developer for a specific platform. Each platform holder has its own rules. But usually having released projects or direct contacts with platform representatives helps a lot.

I think obviously this is only possible if you have a legal entity. In advance, I would advise you to prepare design documentation for the game in English. We were greatly helped by personal acquaintance with the platforms and support from our publisher.

Can platformers ask for any changes to the game?

Usually not, unless there is something in your game that doesn’t follow the rules of a particular platform. I would advise not to add images, gamepads and consoles to the game that can be uniquely identified as devices of a certain platform. Also, the content must comply with the age restrictions under which the game is certified.

We had a funny story when one of the platforms found a gamepad in the game environment that looked like a gamepad from another console and asked to fix it. For your understanding, SKYHILL has a scene with a hanged man, and there were no complaints about it.

What kind of bureaucratic procedures do you need to go through to release a game on consoles?

You need to get past the barrier and convince platformers that you are a promising and real developer worth working with. Get age ratings for the game. Well, the main fear that you hear from those who have been involved in porting is the certification process.

Each platform has many criteria for a quality product and must be met. Your game will be really played, they will be tested for technical compliance with standards. Any non-compliance with the criteria of the platform is a denial of certification and a waste of time. There are quite a few stories where developers tried to get certified 7-10 times. And each time it takes weeks.

Freaky Awesome

In general, half of the certification criteria could apply to just a quality PC product. What happens if the user’s controller is disabled while playing? If he presses the device’s shutdown button anywhere in the game?

The second half refers to the platform SDK. Your game should work perfectly in an ecosystem of achievements, saves, user profiles, cloud saves, and so on. If some of these requirements were imposed on games that are released on Steam, then everyone would only benefit from this.

On average, if everything goes well, how long does it take for bureaucratic procedures? Which console is easier, which is harder?

Switch porting looks the easiest at the moment. For example, experienced porters from the publisher managed to make a fully working build of SKYHILL in a week. A month later, the game was already uploaded for certification, but this is more due to internal reasons. In general, it was possible to manage in a couple of weeks.

As far as PS4 and Xbox One are concerned, these are already developed platforms with a lot of mechanisms and they require much more serious approach and technical level. Those who have been porting for a long time have self-written “wrappers” to which any game is attached, which reduces porting time by several times. Problems arise when you write it for the first time. This is about the technical part.

From the point of view of bureaucracy, I would not single out any platform. There is a big difference here. If you are approaching this issue for the first time (as, probably, most of those who are interested in this article), then very often you simply do not know where to start.

You are confused in portals, setting up devkits, looking for how to get a device if you are registered in the CIS. You get age ratings for different regions again. All of this is to be figured out.

Nintendo and Microsoft are now more open to communication, if you look at the whole. Xbox has an [email protected] program that is aimed specifically at small developers. Nintendo also favors indie developers and supports interesting projects. They even have a Nindies direction.

Do I need a devkit for porting? Where to get it?

Difficult to answer directly. Let me just say that for a developer from the CIS, this is not the most trivial task.

Devkit PlayStation 4

Can there be any difficulties due to the engine I have chosen? Or does it matter?

The most common engines, of course, support building for consoles. If you are making a game on Unreal or Unity, then there will definitely be no problems. At least the engine itself will not cause problems. As far as I know, Game Maker has also solved these problems (I just need to clarify about full support for the Nintendo Switch). And I would not recommend using other engines in our time of cross-platform development.

We develop all of our games in Unity. The engine has always been positioned as cross-platform and this is its main advantage.

If I don’t know anything about porting myself, where can I turn? To publishers?

There are publishers that specialize in porting and releasing games to specific platforms. This is what we did with our Freaky Awesome game. We turned to our partners from BadLand in Spain.

We released the game on Steam ourselves, but after the painful experience of SKYHILL, we did not dare to port it to consoles and gave the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch to the publisher. They completely took over the process of porting and certification. There are also outsource studios that provide porting and testing for compliance with certification requirements for a fixed fee.

In the future, we are not going to port new projects ourselves. Even though we have dev kits for all three consoles, we want to focus more on the quality of the gaming experience. As we continue to work with publishers, this function will be filled by them.

Was there anything else painful with SKYHILL besides the technical problems described above and the case with the gamepad?

In general, when you start porting, you feel very stupid. You know, like when you study at the university, and they ask you some bullshit, and you don’t even understand what is required of you.

These are unique game requirements that are only needed for a specific console. Even such trivial tasks as issuing achievements, for example, can turn into a problem that needs to be solved for several days.

Typically, experienced developers plan to port a game to three consoles for six months. In fact, it often takes from one to three months. But if you have no experience at all, then you can easily kill a year of your life on this.

Consoles don’t have as many digital distribution stores as PCs. In fact, platform holders are monopolists. Does it affect the percentage of revenue?

It’s not much different from Steam. But no one here can answer you in detail, of course. In general, the percentage of profit is not the main thing to think about. Access to a new audience that is used to buying games for a penny, and fewer games in stores on consoles is much more important.

Does it even make sense for indies to come out on consoles? Is it possible to earn more on them than on a PC?

And what does it have to do with «indie or not»? I don’t see the difference between a big studio and a couple of indies in terms of business. If it is possible to go to consoles, if your game makes money from PC, then you can start earning more with consoles.

Game developer creates intellectual property. It is entirely reasonable to try to provide as many sources of long-term income for the created product as possible. For example, for SKYHILL Nintendo Switch is already the sixth platform (the game has already been released on Steam, IOS, Android, PS4 and Xbox One) and we earn money on each of them. Although the game was released on Steam in 2015, it still lives on.

Freaky Awesome is out on Steam, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. In preparation for release on Xbox One. With the next game, we hope to have a simultaneous release on PC and all consoles.

How is featured in console stores? How can you make your game more visible?

Each platform has its own rules regarding featuring. Usually at the start of the game will fall into the list of new products. And then it all depends on the specific game and communication with the platform managers.

Is there any fixed number of impressions on the main page for all, as it was on Steam, on consoles?

He hasn’t been on Steam for a long time. There are general rules for showing new products, games with discounts. And as for featuring, you need to negotiate.

Who sets the prices for console games? Can I manage them myself and arrange sales?

As with other platforms such as Steam and the AppStore, discount management is on the shoulders of the game publisher, but it is also possible to discuss discount plans with the platform manager and schedule something special for certain events.

What about regional prices on different consoles? Is it necessary to assign them?

No, not necessarily. On some platforms, this feature is limited and it is not possible to assign a special price for a certain country. The platform can also “advise” not to cut the price much for the region.

But the final decision is still up to the publisher or the developer? And is this true for all consoles, or does each have its own quirks?

The final decision is always up to the publisher of the game, not the platform, of course.

On the PlayStation 4, for example, some games require PS Plus for multiplayer, while others do not. Who decides whether a subscription will be required for online modes: developers or platformers?

We do not have games with online multiplayer on consoles, but everything related to the unique conditions for getting into subscription services is discussed individually.

In general, what tools do platformers offer to track statistics and manage the game page?

It’s hard to answer directly, but they are much poorer than the statistics that Steam gives us and the systems themselves look more outdated from the developer’s side.

And if you need some specific information that the platform owner does not provide by default, can you request it?

If you can explain why you need it and the platform has the ability to provide you with the information, then it’s worth a try. And this applies not only to consoles, but also to Steam, for example.

Why do so many indie studios release their games on the Nintendo Switch? Is this due to the company’s own policy towards independent developers, the architecture of the console, or the conditions that Nintendo offers?

Here is the whole complex of factors. Many AAA publishers do not have the ability to optimize their games for weaker devices. It makes perfect sense that Nintendo needed to go to indie game developers and just less hardware-intensive games to offer their players more choices once they get past Zelda and Mario. Also, porting to Nintendo Switch is technically easier, except for optimization.

What exactly are the optimization problems that arise when developing on the Switch?

Smaller games shouldn’t usually have problems if they are well optimized. In the case of SKYHILL and Freaky Awesome, there were no optimization problems at all.

For more demanding games with 3D or more visual effects, this can also be a problem. The same goes for games that use a lot of physics or are simply badly optimized. PC is much more forgiving.

What you get

What’s included in Custom PS4 and Xbox One Console Game Development

  • Development / revision of the idea: benchmark for demand and popularity

Perhaps you already have a great idea for a future game. In this case, we will only finalize it, turn it into a plot, and then into a full-fledged script. If this is not available, our experts will offer their options based on an analysis of supply and demand, as well as the latest trends in the gaming industry

  • Pre-production: design document in perfect order

At this stage, we will provide you with a design document that details the concept and gameplay (gameplay). It also contains concept art, sketches of various game moments. If necessary, we can include the selected game engine and functioning prototypes.

While you are reviewing the design document, Network Media programmers and artists are creating initial prototypes. This will allow you to see and evaluate some of the possibilities and features of the future game. Also, at the stage of pre-production, the development of its frame can be carried out.

When the design document and prototypes are approved, we proceed to the next stage — production.

  • Development of the first level: an idea turns into a hit

Network Media puts a lot of emphasis on first-level development, as this is the most critical phase of production. The first level is a test of the idea and all previous developments for strength, the formation of the most complete and clear vision of the future product. All other levels of the game are made in his design and software image and likeness. At this stage, we turn a great idea into a gaming hit

  • Further production: improvement, improvement and further improvement

Programmers write source code, writers write dialogue and voice-overs, artists draw graphics, level designers develop levels, sound engineers select sound effects…

At the same time, we continue to work on the overall improvement of the product, making adjustments that will ensure its successful promotion on the market. We notify you of all the most significant changes and additions. Network Media maintains constant feedback with the customer

  • Testing: finishing

With the help of testing, Network Media not only, figuratively speaking, eliminates roughness, but also gives the product a final gloss. We use various testing options. In addition to our internal team, we involve both professional testers-outsourcers and beta testers — gamers interested in improving the product

  • Add-on release (optional): to keep the game going and going

Network Media is ready to develop and release any add-on for the console game. These can be new maps, levels, missions, functionality and various game elements — costumes, weapons, vehicles, etc. Add-ons are primarily needed to maintain user interest in the product, as well as a marketing and advertising move. The release of a new add-on is an occasion to remind about your product

  • Promotion (Optional): Getting Started

Network Media is a full cycle IT company, so we are ready to provide services for promoting the game on the Internet.
