Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Remastered (a.k.a. Mystic Quest Remastered or MQR) is a Fan Remake of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest created by Dark Design Studios using RPG Maker. It maintains the plot and flow of the original game but engages in numerous points of Adaptation Expansion with new equipment, areas, bosses and a change up in the party line-up at various points in the game.

Out of the completed versions, v1.7a contains more overall changes while the latest, v2, returns to being more like the original game while keeping many of the remaining changes.

The official release will never happen. Dark Design attempted to sell their game and began charging for pre-orders, claiming they had Approval of God. They didn’t, and the entire project has been shut down at Square Enix’s request, and the development files destroyed by Kisareth Studios (the company that acquired Dark Design). A video going into more detail about the situation made by Kisareth employee’s can be found here.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Both versions make a few storyline changes such as Phoebe re-joining the party in Fireburg, having a full party of four for the final dungeon and fleshing the characters out a bit more. v1.7a also gave the user full control on where to go in the world map as well as adding smaller areas to explore that often simply contained treasures and/or cameos from other Final Fantasy titles.
  • Anti-Grinding: Once an enemy is killed inside of any dungeon except for the final one, it is Killed Off for Real and will never re-spawn in v2.
  • Bonus Boss: Battlefield bosses in v1.7a can be considered as such while Hades and Light Ozma and Dark Ozma are pure examples. In v2 Hades returns and Yu Yevon is added to the roster.
  • Contractual Boss Immunity: Played straight and averted depending on the boss. Some of them require disabling them with status ailments in order to survive long enough to win!
  • Dual Boss: Light Ozma and Dark Ozma in v1. 7a.
  • Duel Boss: Odin is designed to be one when obtaining the Venus Shield as he’s the only one that Benjamin could potentially fight alone.
  • Dual Wielding: Reuben can now do so in both versions.
  • Eleventh Hour Super Power: Benjamin gains a brand new ability literally in the room before the final boss.
  • Gotta Catch ‘Em All: The majority of the achievements unlocked in v2 are related to killing all of the monsters and looting all of the treasure in each dungeon.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Captain Mac in both versions.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Obtained from the bonus bosses in v1.7a, obtained from behind the Celestial Doors in v2.
  • Let’s Play: Before the project died, Gunarm Dyne was the first to do v1.7a and Dark Design also asked him to do v2, which he did. Even though the project is dead, the videos are still available to watch on his channel.
  • Magic Knight: Benjamin is still one, though he no longer learns/obtains every spell in the game.
  • Nintendo Hard: Both versions are much harder than the original, especially v2. However, the game is generous with gil in order to purchase healing items. You will need them!
  • Pre Existing Encounters: In both versions.
  • Random Encounters: Played straight in v1.7a while v2 returns to Pre Existing Encounters only.
  • Running Gag: Phoebe zapping Reuben with lightning whenever he flirts with her in v2.
  • Shipper on Deck: In v2, Reuben and Phoebe get together at the end of the game.
  • Tsundere: Phoebe is a Type A towards Reuben in v2, and gets a bit angry when Benjamin catches her crying in both versions. Though it’s a bit questionable as to whether she actually likes Reuben or merely just tolerates him, as she doesn’t return any affection and gets annoyed when he tries to flirt with her.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: One of the new bosses, Cerberus, definitely fits this. If you don’t hit him with Reuben’s status attacks, you will die.

The game proposes to play as a young gladiator who opposes the Black King and the empire of the Glaive in order to save the mana tree, the source of all life. Various characters help in the search for the hero, including the heroine, who occupies a special place in the script. The player controls an avatar from a bird’s eye view and must traverse the environment, kill monsters, and talk to characters in order to progress through the storyline. The experience point system allows you to increase the characteristics of the character, and the use of several types of weapons and spells increases the development opportunities.

The game was released on the Game Boy in 1991 in Japan and the United States, and then in 1993 in Europe in a fully translated version (English, French, German, Italian). This European version was one of the first Japanese RPG video game console releases in the region. Scenario

The story takes place in a world dominated by the mana tree, from which the Cascade, the source of all life in the world, originates. The mana tree shines with beauty when people are spiritually pure, and the water flowing from its roots further helps purify the spirits. On the other hand, when a mana tree is tainted with an evil substance, the waterfall spouting from its roots is tinged with evil. He then incites people to evil, and their negative energy rises to the tree, making its existence even more evil. This is a vicious cycle that continues until the destruction of the world.

The Vandol Empire once used the power of Mana for evil purposes, but their plans were thwarted by the Knights of the Gem. However, the Glaive Empire, a new power ruled by the Black King and the wizard Julius, wants to take over the power of the mana tree again.

The protagonist of the game is a young slave who fights every day for the pleasure of the Black King. One day, returning to the slave quarters after killing a monster, our hero discovers that his only friend, Willy, is dying. Willy was also a warrior who infiltrated Glaive’s castle and was captured by Julius. With his last breath, Willie tells him that the mana tree is in danger and that he must find a Jewel Knight named Bogarde. In his quest, the hero meets the main character, who will follow him throughout the quest.

game system

The game is presented as an action role-playing game in 2D from top to bottom. The player can move the hero in four directions using the navigation pad. The A button allows you to hit with a weapon, and the B button allows you to use a spell or an object previously selected in the inventory. The player must travel the world, talk to characters, complete quests, or find items to progress through the storyline. Monster-infested dungeons dot the adventure.

The game includes many role — playing mechanics . With each hit on the enemy, the hero receives a certain amount of experience points, which depends on the strength of this enemy. At the end of a predetermined amount of accumulated experience points, the hero gains a level. At this stage, the player can choose to increase any of the four hero stats (provided the differences are not too great), which allows him to partially choose how he will play next. The hero has different equipment. Armor or weapons can be bought in villages or found in dungeons. The interest is in getting and equipping the best weapons and armor to increase your character’s power.

During the adventure, the player will discover six weapons (sword, star, flail, axe, sickle and spear) and will be able to learn eight magic spells, usually guarded by bosses. Every type of enemy in the game is more or less resistant to every type of weapon or offensive spell. Certain weapons or items acquired during the adventure allow for previously impassable obstacles to be overcome (a pickaxe allows you to destroy rocks, an ax allows you to chop down trees, etc.), forcing the player to observe the scenery and return to old areas. to progress.

The Item Inventory, accessible from the menu, allows you to store a variety of items, including healing items that increase health points or restore magic points, keys to open closed dungeon doors, or unique items needed to progress.

One of the features of the combat system is a built-in scale at the bottom of the screen that simulates the strength of attacks. It fills up when no hit is being landed. The higher the caliber, the more powerful the blow. When the gauge is full, the hero launches a very powerful special attack that depends on the type of weapon.

During some scenes, an auto-guided NPC accompanies the hero and helps him progress by helping him meet enemies and provide him with assistance.

  • Heroine: don’t fight and heal lost hit points slowly
  • Bogarde: Sword Fighting and Tips for Optimal Use of Weapons
  • Red Mage: Throws fireballs and gives advice on using a pickaxe when healing poison.
  • Watts Ax Fight and Gear Purchase Offers
  • Amanda: dagger fight and free the hero from petrification
  • Leicester: archery and can change the music of the game
  • Chocobo: don’t fight; if the hero rides on his back, he can move at high speed and does not get hurt by opponents. Later in the story, he can walk on water.
  • Marcy: sends beams and restores magic points

Development and editing

In 1987, Square registered the trademark 聖剣伝説 The Emergence of Excalibur ( Seiken Densetsu: The Emergence of Excalibur , literally «The Legend of the Sacred Sword: The Emergence of Excalibur») for a role-playing video game project before coming out in the year. Designed by Kazuhiko Aoki, the game is for five Famicom Disk System (Famicom peripheral) floppy disks, it is one of the biggest games ever for this machine. Square buys ads and lets its customers book the game, but according to a former Square employee, this ambitious project wasn’t accepted early in development. In a letter of apology for the cancellation of the game, which Square sent to its customers at , the company advises returning to Final Fantasy , their new RPG which, according to the letter, «is of the same nature (an RPG with a group of four characters)».

After creating Final Fantasy III Tanaka wants to create a game with a more interactive, seamless combat system, without a complex combat system or separate battle screen. However, tests are not final during development Final Fantasy IV . Square then decides to release another game, Mystic Quest . In 1991, a new role-playing project for the Game Boy handheld console was taken over by a group of new employees led by Koichi Ishii. The game was originally called Gemma Knights . Koichi Ishii introduces the concept and directs the creation. Goro Ohashi is presenting the map, Kazuku Shibuya is designing the graphics, and Satoru Yoshieda and Masaaki Saito are programming the game. For his first job at Yoshinori’s company, Kitase writes the script and works as a coordinator. For his part, Kenji Ito is recording his first full video game soundtrack here. Unlike two Final Fantasy Legends (referred to in Japan as SaGa ) released for the Game Boy, or three NES Final Fantasy, made by the company, the game does not have a turn-based system during combat. However, there is still an RPG: all damage dealt and received depends on the characteristics of the character or their equipment, which are visible and which develop during the game through the experience system.

Square, not wanting to lose the Seiken Densetsu trademark, decides to rename the game for its Japanese release. The game is published by Square in Japan on titled Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden It was translated into English and published in the US by Square’s American subsidiary under the title Final Fantasy Adventure . The game even benefits from being localized into multiple languages for the European market. It was released in 1993 in various countries in the region. This version is released from license name Final Fantasy take the name Mystic Quest , the name has already been used a few months ago in the US market in the area of the game Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the Super Nintendo (called Mystic Quest Legend when it was released). European).

In early 1998, the Japanese company Sunsoft signed an agreement with Square to re-release some of their games on the Game Boy. Mystic Quest, and also three episodes of Final Fantasy Legend are part of it.

The game was translated into French by Sylvia Bomstein.

Home

The French magazine Player One enthusiastically criticized the game in its summer 1993 issue. The author «insists on the quality of the music and the richness of the script» and gives an overall rating of 94%.
