Guide for Joy Ride Turbo

Championships

Seeing as it is at the top of the menu, we will start with the championships. The only one that you will be able to access is the 100HP one. At first you will only be able to select one car in each of the categories, as you need to collect parts of cars around each track and stunt park to unlock all the cars.

As mentioned above there are car part boxes throughout the race tracks. They are easy enough to find for yourself, but videos of where the car part boxes are on each track can be found in my playlist, here. These can be done as you are doing the race or after in “Quick Race” mode.

Anyway, back to the championships. You do not need to win any of the championships — just come at least 3rd. Bear in mind though that you will need over 3 million coins to buy all the cars for the required achievement, so try to win them, as you will get more money. Once you have done the first 3 championships in the 100HP category you should have unlocked:

Now you just have to complete the main 100HP championship and you should also have:

It is now just a case of rinse and repeat with the 200HP and the 300HP championships. Upon completion of these you will have finished the Championship portion of the game and also got 2 more achievements:

Stunt Park

Now we will move onto the “Stunt Park” section of the game. I recommend you do this in two stages. The first is to get all the cars from the two areas. This will allow you to buy better cars when you collect the trophies. Two videos can be seen below detailing the locations of all the car part boxes here. Once you have them all and have all the race track ones, every car should be unlocked and you should also have an achievement:

Still in the “Stunt Park” mode, now choose a 300HP car (I recommend the Hammerhead muscle car). We shall now go for the trophy collectibles. They are all easy enough to find by yourself, but the videos can be found below if you really want to use them. Once again, credit for the videos go to YouTube user, Pointy Pete. One thing I want to note is to try and always have a blue bottle as your weapon/power-up, as this will give you a speed boost, even when your car is going vertically up, you will need it on some of them.

After you have all 40 trophies on a Stunt Park you will get the relevant achievement for it:

Time Trial

Just the last few achievements to go…

One of them is to do 50 consecutive laps on Time Trial mode. Load up Time Trial mode and select a 300HP car on the track, Rocky Road Speedway. You can get your lap time to roughly 18 seconds per lap on this track, so in total it will take you from 10 to 15 minutes to get this.

Time for the only grind of this game. You need to get enough money to be able to buy all the cars, the amount required for this is over 3 million. Some cars have multiple variations so use the RT and LT buttons to switch between variations to make sure you have brought all of them. You do not need to buy the different colours of each car, just the different variations.

After you have got your first 1 million coins (this does not need to be all in your bank, but is more a cumulative total) you will see the following achievement pop:

Now continue on buying all the cars and you will then see:

Joy Ride Turbo (Xbox 360)

Like many games developed to make use of the Kinect motion sensor, Kinect Joy Ride was soon looking for a way to broaden its audience by including more typical controller inputs. However, rather than retooling their original game to offer two different control methods, the developers decided to develop a sequel instead, and so, Joy Ride Turbo was born, carrying over some of the tracks and elements from the original racing game while still adding in some new content to make it more than just a rerelease.

 

Joy Ride Turbo is a racing game that, despite featuring some rather realistic vehicle designs, is actually more of a kart racer than a racing sim. A typical race will feature many of the aspects of track design that make a driving game interesting, with plenty of turns and alternate paths to take to try and get in front of your competition. Controlling the cars feels natural, with the player able to drift if they so choose but having a pretty decent basic level of control over their motion and speed. From here though, things get a bit more interesting, as cars can fill up a boost meter through stylish maneuvers during a race. Pulling off long drifts is one way to earn the boost energy, but there are often jumps on the course where you can take advantage of the air time to flip or spin your vehicle, the more maneuvers you pull of during your hang time turning into more boost power. Once you’ve gathered enough energy, you can start taking advantage of these bursts of speed to overtake the other cars, much of a race devoted to not only finding the best path through a course but also building up boost at every opportunity and using it so you can refill it quickly.

Items also join the fray in Joy Ride Turbo, players getting a random item to help them out when they hit mystery boxes that appear in the road. The use of each item is pretty easy to glean from the icons that represent them and easy to remember for the few that do require use to learn, things like rockets obviously being used as a projectile you fire at other racers to mess them up and the full boost power up distinct enough to tell apart from the other items once you’ve used it once. Players can expect to get powerups like decoy item boxes, shields to protect themselves from others, and speed boosts, with racers in the lower places having opportunities to get even better items like one that will freeze all the other racers briefly. However, no item is so powerful it will drastically change the course of the race, even the freeze allowing racers to move forward while encased in ice but lose their ability to turn until they break the ice with a boost or by hitting something. They add some more variety to the play and can close small skill gaps between players, but knowing the tracks and driving well will still lead to victory most of the time. The items are perhaps not all too exciting though because of this design choice though, but the boost meter does have a greater impact on play due to its constant prominence.

 

While the items, boost, and driving all feel up to par, the course design does leave a little to be desired. Joy Ride Turbo does offer plenty of splitting paths to encourage racers to take risks on trying to take the harder to access shortcuts, and there are some cases where you’ll drive on interesting roads like the side of a dam or riding up the sloped sides of canyons, but most of the tracks do feel a little condensed. A typical lap in many areas doesn’t really encounter much gimmickry or exciting driving challenges, the player often able to stick to the road with a pretty good guarantee of hitting boosters on the track and item boxes along the way. Shortcuts don’t always offer the edge that makes going for them worth it, so even levels that have more interesting visual variety like the lighthouse course or the one with the large dragon start to feel a bit dry due to straightforward driving demands. Jumps sometimes try to make up for it by being long rather than challenging, and the jumps in some levels actually eat up too much of the time so the driving isn’t give the room it needs to be a constant source of competition. The gimmickier stages actually face this problem a lot, where perhaps the most clearly different design found is in a canyon that you cross with large cannons… but short track length and the time spent in the canyons means not much time is given for trying to overtake the competition. Funnily enough, perhaps the other track with a pronounced notable gimmick is one styled like a go-kart track, its gimmick being that it has no item boxes or ramps for boosting, the focus on driving skill giving it a stronger identity than most levels. A lack of clear segments on many tracks makes most of the them lose their luster after racing through them a few times.

While Joy Ride Turbo does offer multiplayer racing options to compete with friends locally or online, the single-player takes the form of a few tournaments, the player needing to complete different cups that are made up a few races each. The cups are divided first based on the horsepower of the engines you’ll be using, these being pretty much difficulty levels since slower races come with less skilled AI racer opponents. From there, the cups are then divided by the type of car you’ll be using. While you’ll always be racing as your Microsoft Avatar, the cars you drive come in a few different forms, these being Muscle Cars, Sports Cars, and Trucks. While they all control pretty similarly, they do have a few differences like the amount of boosts they can hold onto at one time. Each set of races will feature a cup focused on each type of car that must be finished to unlock one where all the cars can race together, but getting first place in them isn’t totally necessary so long as you place high enough based on the points you accumulate in each race. Much like the tracks though, some of these cups feel over too quickly, it being fairly easy to complete the single player content without being wholly satisfied by the content on offer, the cups trying to present the tracks in different orders but not able to overcome their plain design through rearrangement.

 

There is one other mode for players to mess around in though, that being the two Stunt Parks. Stunt Parks don’t focus on competitive racing, players instead set out to drive around a large area designed to be explored. Here, players can try and drive across dangerous tracks, gain incredible amounts of air, or pull off excellent movement to reach hidden areas all in the pursuit of different collectibles. The main focus of the mode are the trophies scattered about that are only available if you can pull off the stunts required to reach them, but the mode also has vehicle parts hidden all around its action hubs. The way you unlock new rides in Joy Ride Turbo is through collecting these hidden crates either in the Stunt Parks or during normal races, and while the Stunt Parks are bit a more lenient with them, you’ll often have to go off the beaten path to find them in regular races. The odd thing about them though is that the parts you find don’t total up to a new car too easily, vehicles comprised of three parts that can be hidden all across the different tracks and parks so it ends up being quite hard to guarantee you’ll unlock the vehicles you’re interested in. While there are some interesting designs on offer like dune buggies, vans, and sleeker sports cars, the odd thing about these vehicles is that despite being difficult to unlock, they aren’t really much better than the defaults. Some have a clear edge over others, but most of them have their stats distributed where something like an increase in speed comes with worse control as the price for such an edge. It makes the unlocking process a little unrewarding despite this being a pretty smart way of ensuring multiplayer won’t be dominated by players who put in the time to get these vehicles. The drawback of this though is that single-player can be pretty easily completed with default vehicles, there being little reason to pursue the extra content since it doesn’t really give you any strong edge towards completing its challenges.

THE VERDICT: The mechanics of Joy Ride Turbo are where it works the best, the driving as responsive as you’d hope and the extra features making the races a bit more interesting. Easy to understand items that aren’t too disruptive allow better racers to win but still give inexperienced players the potential for a comeback while the boost system is a more present mechanic with a more active role in success that helps keep races constantly competitive. However, it’s pretty easy to speed through the entire game, many of the tracks feeling short and generic with even the explorative Stunt Parks exhausting much of their content a bit too quickly. Unlocking vehicles seems to be the only task that requires constant exploration and activity, but the rewards for doing so aren’t meaningful enough to justify the quest, meaning that Joy Ride Turbo is left as an acceptable kart racer without the bells and whistles that could have made it truly exciting.

 

And so, I give Joy Ride Turbo for Xbox 360…

An OKAY rating. While not a joyless experience, it is one that feels a bit underdeveloped. Having only two stunt parks feels like a sign that the developers weren’t too interested in exploring their ideas, instead putting them out there and hoping they’d pass muster on the merits of their basic but acceptable design. Everything works in Joy Ride Turbo, the driving is up the task and the items do their job of adding bursts of variety to the race well, but there’s not much here that excels. The track design is too reserved to stand out most of the time and the vehicles don’t drastically change their feel even between disparate builds like bulky vans and sleek sports cars. A bit more danger, a bit more variation, and more meaningful goals to pursue than collecting vehicle parts could give Joy Ride Turbo what it needs to be exhilarating and a game worth returning to, but it does at least work pretty well as racing game junk food. It won’t fill you up, but its still got enough in its small package to give you an accessible pick up and play racing title

 

Perhaps Joy Ride Turbo just has a case of strong indecision holding it back. It’s born from changing from one control method to another, but now it feels a little trapped between its realistic elements and its wackier kart racing side. Leaning more strongly one way or another could have benefited it, but it does contain enough fair racing and unusual track design that it will at least keep players looking for either style of play pleased, it just won’t hook them by featuring either angle enough to leave a strong impression.

It so happened that I really wanted to go to my beloved Crimea with my family, a bicycle, and it was in September, but ticket prices said that none of us would have any Crimea. I almost almost said goodbye to the idea of ​​a vacation, but a variant with Sochi, but without a bicycle, turned up. Tyulening so tyulening I thought — it’s better that way than just the Ural ashes. Rest in Adler began very measuredly: porridge-beach-lunch-beach-dinner-beer, well, such a cycle for three days, and then it was repeated every other day. Type activity. Not the cheapest pleasure, I must say. And in general, if the place is more civilized, then get ready to give at least five for the smallest family, but that’s the way it is.

Further, how it was. At Rose 1170, we went to look for a grocery store, because we were very thirsty, because. we didn’t take anything with us, and water was sold everywhere for 100 rubles per 0.5 liter, which threatened complete exhaustion and so dystrophic budget burdened with mortgages, repairs, and other family joys. As a result, we found: a) a grocery store with sane prices b) a place where ebikes stood.
Since that moment my life has changed

The first meeting was brief. I walked around, rode 200 meters, then walked again, rode again, listened to the guy from the rental, who knows a lot about these bikes, rode again, the family stood patiently and waited. Then the wife rolled. In short, the first feeling was enough for me to want an ebike much more than a Gelik, a splitboard and an elixir of eternal youth. A fire, a break in the pattern, it’s bombing me, it’s dishonest, and don’t give a damn about honesty, he goes by himself, I want him — thoughts after 15 minutes around this were about the same. But it was also clear that there were too many questions that could not be answered for oneself without a real long trip.
I took a business card from the guys from this rental ridersbike.ru, I found out that they organize rides on these bikes, both small and for the whole day. And he went with his family to continue riding cable cars, admiring the mountains, but some kind of tectonic shift had already occurred inside.

Intermission
From that moment on, my life turned upside down, because all thoughts were only about this great. More precisely, not about him, because I somehow have no interest in pieces of iron, but about the opportunity to ride, since this opportunity is right at hand, just forty minutes away on a swallow. In the evening I opened the site of the guys, looked at the routes, looked at the prices, closed it, because the day of the coil costs around 5k. Which is like a lot. Then I thought, opened it again, chose that I would like to ride the route to Khmeli, because I want to swing the bike not only up, but also down the trail, well, or from Polyana to Khosta, because I have not been there and the route itself is quite long, something about 70-80km — just to find out if the battery will take me to the sea. I called, agreed on a couple of days, there are still some guys who are also going on these dates. True, we will go to Aishkha, and there will be no trails. I told my wife that we would be 5k poorer. But in order to somehow correct the situation and this review took place, I stopped even thinking about eating corn, shavukha, churchkhela, kebabs, homemade wine, riding a banana and a catamaran — and this is far from an exhaustive list of hardships). Act II
On the appointed day, I jump into a swallow at the railway station in Adler, an hour later I’m already there, they give me a bike and a helmet, I wait for the guys who issue passes to the protected area and we go to the route called Aishkha. About 20 km on the way up and the same amount back down the same way. About 3 years ago I was already there with Koval — we went on a strange (for driving), but no less eventful 3-day tour from Polyana to Psebay, although we climbed this particular section on shishigs that died somewhere on altitude of 1800 and we were shaking in them for about 2 hours.
By the way, they gave me a Specialized Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie Expert, like the most top-end and pretentious with a price tag under the poll, or even higher. The guys had simpler models, but it seems like all the difference was in the shock and fork, so we had the same electrical part.

The bike has three motor modes: eco (30%), trail (50%) and, let’s call it dumb junior (or turbo, 100%). We turned on the eco (with a button on the frame, there is also a charge indicator), which, in theory, should be enough for the longest time and drove off. Of the features, I can immediately note one point: when you sit on the bike, everything is like everyone else, but there is a feeling of a very heavy steering wheel, almost like on a four. At first I thought it was because of the weight of the bike — about 22-23kg, but now I’m inclined to think that low pressure and 27.5+ on 3.0 give cosmic grip even on asphalt, even on the ground. Well, and it immediately caught my eye that pulling a bunch, if the technique is clumsy wrong shit like mine — it’s impossible — it’s too heavy. In the first seconds, even a parebrik race can surprise you.
The first five kilometers to the checkpoint of the border zone, we roll along the dirt road, set only 100 meters to this section, flew by and didn’t even notice anything, the sensations are cool — not the most interesting sections can be overcome much faster and as if without much tension. The speed is probably under 20 km/h. Little by little, I began to understand (although I didn’t fully understand) how this assist works. When you sit on the bike, you press the pedal, then for the first second or two it seems to get under the asshole and tries to leave from under you (especially in the turbo junior mode) — it stupidly pedals itself, then everything calms down and here comes some kind of then magic, because I don’t understand. Either it measures your power and adds some according to some formula with integrals and logarithms, or it gives out exactly 30% (in eco mode) of the maximum power (which is about 250W). Moreover, I understand that the second option is most likely implemented, but the sensations tend to the first … The truth, apparently, is somewhere in the middle. Well, a little banal — an assist is not a motor-wheel, so if you do not press the pedals, then electricity will not work for you. Moreover, it became clear that the cadence somehow affects the operation of the motor — the larger it is (within reasonable limits — 90 rpm, I think, is the optimal value), the easier it is for both you and the motor to ride. And the stability of pedaling is also very important — you turn smoothly, you don’t know any problems, you twist jerkily — for some reason, a flask starts to whistle at the motor, in terms of what it feels like, the power becomes less. You drop the pedal speed below a certain level and you no longer feel the help of the motor, most likely because it lacks power at a low pedal cadence. Probably, there is still a certain formula for outputting power, because the bike measures at least two parameters — cadence and wheel speed. While driving, this, of course, is all felt, but only if you pay attention. So everything happens on an intuitive level — it became hard to turn — you take it and downshift, it became too easy — you increase it — everything is as always.

After the checkpoint, the angle of elevation increased quite well. For the next 6 km we scored about 500 meters. And I didn’t sweat at all, it would seem — here she is a freebie, already 600 meters of climbing behind, and there is no fatigue at all. But not everything is so simple. There were four of us, three of us are accustomed to climbs, and one guy loves to ride downhill, and so the eco mode (from the word economical) did not allow him to stay in the same group with us and he constantly lagged behind. And, I think, tired more than ours. Those. if you push the pedals weaker, then you go slower, the motor will not do all the work for you. But it was a moment of captivity. Then he just turned on the trail mode (50%) and that was enough to go with us at the same pace or slightly ahead. And before that, I decided to find out what would happen if I turned off the engine on a slight slope — the guys in the eco mode just drove forward, and my legs became like lead, and an anchor from the Titanic was tied to the bike. The difference, of course, is cosmic. They have 10 km/h, God forbid 5)
At some stream we met two more guys on ebikes. They were hard fats on bald tires with an incomprehensible frying pan in front and a road cassette in the back. I won’t say anything about them, except that they had great slops, but on a simple upward slope they rode just as easily as we did. And then they ran out of transmissions

At an altitude of about 1100, the slope began to be fucked up (and this is already up to the very top — up to 2000). The minimum gear of 32-42 in eco mode was not enough for me and in the end I switched to trail mode, which greatly increased my capabilities. Sweat poured out like a river, my legs began to clog, one, two, or three hundred meters of set, but you seemed to be going and not stopping. There is definitely no freebie here. And here, when behind an hour and a half or two in the saddle and about 1000 sets, we can already begin to draw the first serious conclusions. The battery of riders is discharged at different speeds even in the same mode! But that’s all later.

In the meantime, we have begun to see what walls are on the route. In order to drive into them, I turned on the turbo mode (although, of course, this rides on a countryman, but it’s sooo hard with the lungs inside out). Feelings said that the turbo mode (and trail) are less sensitive to cadence and begin to help at lower speeds, and the turbo generally starts to work almost like a motor-wheel (the main thing is not to stop at all). And for you to think. The slope is such that I got out on the rise. Through the wheel on the contrary — on the back. You need to almost lie on the steering wheel so that it does not turn over. But at the same time, you have enough power to pedal there and the matter begins to rest on the technique. But it’s nothing complicated, I just didn’t expect that I would take it and drop by.

At some point, a hellish rash began, in addition to a wild slope. This definitely doesn’t work on an ordinary bike — the wheels have nothing to catch on stupidly, but the ebike allowed it to pass here too. Moreover, the UAZ was tearing up from behind and he could not catch up with us until we ourselves waited for him.

At an altitude of 1700, the frank ass ended, everyone switched back to eco (and someone who turns it harder and didn’t even change it). But a problem arose — three people had about 20-30% left in the battery, and this began to strain. On such a slope, when it is already stupidly impossible to go without an assist, I had 10% of the charge for 100-150 meters of climb, i.e. It is obvious that the holiday will end soon. Therefore, we slightly changed the route and went to some lookout. And somewhere else here I had to dismount, because I lost control in the middle of the stones and could not sit back down. So here’s what I have to say. Pushing this bike uphill on foot is hell. It is heavy and so, but when you need to shove it uphill it is something unreal, at least it seemed to me that way and that’s the feeling. It’s like putting on a bag of junk for a week and then trying to take the pass. I think this is what senselessness and ruthlessness look like (and bike trips above the 3rd category of difficulty) Definitely, I would not want to climb the Chatyr-Dag on foot with this bike. All the energy that will be saved by the assist, it seems to me, will disappear in an instant as soon as the portage begins. And to put it on your shoulders — well, fuck it.

At the end, at an altitude of 2000, we stopped at some kind of lookout, where there was a forester who harassed us and said that he wanted to fine us for entering the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, because we arrived at Aishkhu 2, and our pass works on Aishkhu 1 , but did not fine, because he was waiting for more interesting fruits.

In any case, by this moment we are all already quite tired, the batteries are almost at zero (important! for everyone, except for one guy, who still has about 30-40% of the reserve), we do not plan to go higher. There was no freebie. In just 2.5-3 hours, in a motley group with different training, straight from the beach, we gained 1500 meters for 20 km with the wildest slope, which under normal conditions would take at least half a day for an ordinary cotton-wool non-country rider with complete exhaustion of strength (and the most intelligent individuals of velosapiens a sensible person would not even do such a thing). And we still have quite a lot of strength to cheerfully roll down.
Here you need to stop to dream. Here we are so beautiful climbed on some kind of ass, there is no battery to go further, the bike weighs 22kg, i.e. lots of. What options are there? You can turn around and go home from the hill, as we did.
