How to Play The Legend of Zelda on PC

Even if you don’t identify as a gamer, there is a good chance you have heard of “The Legend of Zelda.” This is one of the most critically and commercially successful video game franchises in history, spawning 19 entries and various spinoffs. Ever since the original game was released in 1986, It has been a prominent and influential series, with many of the titles in the franchise considered to be some of the greatest video games ever made. However, the games are only available for Nintendo’s gaming console. Here are some of the ways you can play The Legend of Zelda on your PC.

What Is The Legend of Zelda?

If you’ve never played an entry in The Legend of Zelda series, you might be asking yourself what all the fuss is about. The franchise is classified as an action-adventure game with RPG elements. In the game, players take control of a protagonist named Link who is often tasked with saving the world from a variety of powerful antagonists.

Over the years there have been many additions and refinements to the series, but there are chief gameplay elements that remain in each entry. The games are often heavy on exploration, with puzzle solving and action sequences thrown into the mix. Furthermore, the games reward players for engaging in side quests, often in the form of useful items like weapons or keys to access new areas.

Is The Legend of Zelda Available on PC?

The Legend of Zelda has been primarily developed and published by Nintendo, and the core series of games has been developed exclusively for Nintendo hardware, including both the company’s home and portable consoles.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has never developed an original Zelda game for PC. Additionally, Nintendo has declined to port any of the existing games in the Zelda franchise to PC. This means that PC gamers who would like to try a Zelda game have to get their hands on a Nintendo console first.

How to Play The Legend of Zelda on a PC

Fortunately, it is possible to play The Legend of Zelda on your PC, particularly with an emulator. For a series that spans 19 titles over 33 years, each Zelda game will have its own system requirements. Due to this, which Zelda games you are able to play will largely depend on the specifications of your PC. Therefore, a more powerful PC is more likely to run newer games in the series.

NES Streaming Sites

There are a number of websites that host old retro games that you can play right in your browser. Many of these sites have classic Nintendo games available, including many titles in the Zelda series. Of course, the legality of these sites is up in the air. Nintendo has a reputation for being quite strict when it comes to their older titles. This is mainly due to the fact that many of these titles are available to purchase digitally. Nintendo is aggressive at targeting these sites and forcing them to remove games they believe infringe on copyright.

In addition, there are other major drawbacks to these streaming sites. Many of them are “free to play.” Of course, this often means you’ll have to deal with a significant number of ads and pop-ups. Furthermore, you will be limited to which Zelda titles you are able to play. Because you’ll be playing within your browser, do not expect to play any titles beyond the 16-bit era. Finally, many of these sites utilize Flash Player to run the games, a technology you may no longer have access to now.

Emulation

Emulating Zelda titles is the best way to play them on a PC. In order to do this, you will need two things: an emulator and a ROM file. An emulator is software that mimics the original video game console hardware. Therefore, if you wanted to play the original Legend of Zelda game, you will need an NES emulator. In addition to the emulator, you will also need the game’s ROM. With these two things, you can play virtually any title.

Emulators are developed and maintained by a robust community of enthusiasts. A vast majority of the emulators available are open source, meaning they are free to download and use. However, ROMs are a different story. ROMs occupy a sort of legal grey area. That being said, the general consensus is that it is illegal to download a ROM if you don’t actually own the game. Think of it like pirating a movie. So if you’re thinking of playing a Zelda title on your PC, pick up a copy of the game before you download the ROM.

Which Emulators Do I Need?

The Legend of Zelda series has been around for a long time. As a result, titles in the series have appeared on virtually every single console Nintendo has developed. Below, we will list every Zelda game, along with the standalone emulator we recommend using to play it.

Note: there are multiple emulators available for each console. The emulators we mention below were chosen due to their straightforward setup and ease of use.

If you want a more all-in-one solution and don’t want to install multiple individual emulators, RetroArch should give you good results with all of the games and platforms listed below up until the GameCube and Wii.

While RetroArch has GameCube and Wii support built in through its “Cores,” RetroArch’s version of the Dolphin Core is far, far behind the current progress of the standalone emulator. For the best GameCube and Wii emulation experience, a complete Dolphin installation can’t be beat.

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Nintendo’s beloved hero of Hyrule, Link, sets out to save the kingdom from another threat of imminent danger. Originally being set to be released in 2005, developers decided to take another year to add more features to the game, raising the bar of expectations for the next games in The Legend Of Zelda series to take the spotlight. It was eventually released the same day the Wii console was launched, marking history for Hyrule as being the first Zelda game to debut at the launch of a Nintendo console.

Visuals

In terms of what to expect, Twilight Princess holds the same beloved characters as the other Legend of Zelda games and a similar art style but offering a more dark look of realism in Twilight Princess compared to some of the older, more pixelated versions. Also moving down to offer a third person view instead of the overtop that other games have given is a nice change of scenery, offering the player a bit more of an immersive experience instead of being the all-seeing eye of the game. Integrated with the Wii console, the visual/auditory experience is heightened greatly by matching visual cues with auditory cues that emit from the Wii remote’s built-in speakers. Sounds of a bow being drawn, the discovery chime, and more sounds are emitted as the motion sensor of the remote notices certain patterns of movement of certain effects in the game are activated.

Gameplay

Being another action-adventure game like all other Legend of Zelda stories, Link is once again singled out to be the needed hero and fight away the evil that plagues his beloved Princess Zelda and her kingdom. This time, the threat of a parallel dimension known as the Twilight Realm is corrupting Hyrule and engulfing it into the new dimension. Link is now able to take on the form of a hylian and a wolf, with the aid of a mysterious creature named Midna, and must use all of these powers at his disposal if he wishes to save his home. Able to use projectiles and melee weapons, a player must navigate Link through nine dungeons, each with a separate boss fight at the end of them, to obtain an item needed or advance the plot further to the game. In search for dungeons, Link is able to travel by foot, on his horse, Epona, or even teleporting through unlockable warp points, through the large overworld connecting the dungeons.

Personal Rating

Legend of Zelda is one of the greatest classic games Nintendo has produced, with every game following the intricate storyline and never missing a beat when expanding upon the universe that Link explores day after day.

9

This adaption of the series is no different, with new enemies, new controls, and new features, but the same beloved characters and overarching story. This game deserves at the least, a solid 9/10.

Pros:

  • Same beloved storyline
  • Known beloved characters
  • Eye catching graphics
  • Wii U adaption

Cons:

  • Only Zelda game rated T for fantasy violence/blood
  • Only exists in one timeline of the Zelda universe

Game Reviews

Twilight Princess may be all the reason you need to buy a Wii, but it actually started life on the Cube, and the «lesser” version is just as good as its waggle-licious counterpart. The controls are old-fashioned, sure, and the game world is flipped (what was east is west now) and stripped of widescreen. But the gameplay is spot-on, and that’s what counts.

BOTTOM LINE:

We lavished all 10s on the Wii Princess last issue and, aside from some small technical details, this version is identical. If you haven’t been able to snag a Wii, here’s your chance to try this masterpiece.

Each new chapter in Nintendo’s most revered franchise tackles the same concept—heroic elf boy battles monsters, saves chick, saves world—in a brave new way. Twilight Princess pulls a complete 180 from the last GameCube iteration, The Wind Waker, shirking off that game’s kiddified visual trappings and waterlogged nautical gameplay in favor of a return to the realistic environments, darker themes, and horseback action of 1998’s Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64).

In fact, the story line takes place a few decades after Ocarina’s, although the Link that you control is, in the words of Director Eiji Aonuma, «a new Link. » This Link must contend with a creepy, otherworldly menace known as simply «the twilight» that threatens to envelop the entire realm of Hyrule, transforming it into a barren, dark wasteland. This twilight holds bizarre mysteries: When Link steps into it, he transforms into a wolf, handing players an all-new array of attacks and special abilities to master.

Sadly, the version I played did not feature any sections in which Link became his lupine alter ego, but luckily, I still witnessed plenty of gameplay variety.

In the game’s initial village, I wasted plenty of time messing around as «Cowboy Link,» herding goats on my trusty horse, canoeing downstream, tracking down lost puppies, gliding around with chickens, summoning my pet hawk to knock down a beehive, practicing my swordplay on a dummy, and exploring hidden nooks and crannies in the peaceful hamlet. I’m always amazed by how much enjoyment Nintendo can pack into a tiny, tranquil little town.

Next up, I tackled a horseback combat section on a vast, rolling plain. The sheer size of this location astounded me—it offered an even greater sense of scale than Hyrule Field (the central hub in Ocarina of Time), but with nonstop action, as I fended off attackers from every side. This battle segued into a thrilling (and surprisingly tough) duel on horseback, as I jousted with the enemy leader who rode a hideous boar. Dramatic stuff, indeed.

All of that felt like a warm-up for the true meat of a Zelda experience—a complex, engaging dungeon. Spelunking through this Forest Temple reminded me of what’s so amazing about the series’ labyrinths: Each one offers a cleverly designed location, plenty of enemies to smite, tricky puzzles to solve, and well-hidden secrets to uncover. This one adds two extra elements to further deepen the fun: First, Link recruits a band of helpful monkeys to swing him across expansive pits, and second, he also discovers a new toy, the Gale Boomerang, that can hit multiple targets with tiny whirlwinds. You’ll have to master these new techniques to reach the dungeon’s boss, a colossal, man-eating plant that, in proper Zelda tradition, requires a fair amount of mental prowess to defeat.
Now, the hardest part will be waiting until November to reenter this enchanting world….

This little Link has legs, and we’re not talking about the ones wearing the booties—Nintendo’s tales of elfin heroism in the face of unspeakable evil just never seem to get old. When we first heard that an upcoming Zelda adventure would star a young, cartoony-looking Link, we grumbled with the worst of them. Then Wind Waker came out. Aside from some boring moments piloting a dinghy, it is nearly perfect. Seeing as how the Zelda series ran away with the popular vote and Link’s cameo in the Cube version of Soul Calibur II helped make that game a best-seller, we’re apparently not the only ones in touch with our inner elf. Ultimate moment: In Wind Waker, it has to be your first visit to Hyrule Castle, which is on the ocean floor, frozen in time. Everything is black and white, with statue-like guards caught in midarmpit scratch. It’s one of the eeriest moments in any game we’ve ever played. And then you pull the Master Sword from the stone, time starts ticking again, and all hell breaks loose.

What’s next?

Expect 2004 to be a monumental year for the pointy-eared lad in green tights. First up, two oddball Zelda spin-offs—Four Swords and Tetra’s Trackers—land on GameCube in the next few months. They’re both GBA-connectivity minigames, of sorts, that Nintendo will probably sell for cheap. A full-fledged sequel to Wind Waker and an all-new Game Boy Advance Zelda title are also en route in 2004; both should debut at May’s colossal E3 game expo in Los Angeles.

Expectations don’t get much higher then they do for a new Zelda game on a new console, especially one as unique as the Wii. If you were expecting a fundamentally different Zelda game based on the unique opportunities of the Wii, you might be a little disappointed. If however you were expecting another excellent Zelda game that doesn’t stray far from the series’ conventions then you’ll be more then happy with Twilight Princess.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess like most of the installments in the series recounts the tale of a young boy who through a twist of fate becomes involved with a Princess named Zelda and tasked with saving the land of Hyrule. This time Link has to thwart calamity in the form of an encroaching darkness that is slowly pulling Hyrule into the twilight realm. To accomplish this goal you’ll delve into elemental temples, solve a myriad of cleverly designed puzzles, engage in exciting combat and traverse the shadow realm in the form of a blue eyed wolf. Its familiar territory, yet there are enough interesting twists to keep the game fresh for the 40 or so hours it’ll take to finish.

The Wii remote definitely changes the way Zelda plays, but not in so fundamental a way that it feels like an evolution beyond traditional adventure game standards. You’ll control Link’s movements with the analog stick on the nunchuk controller while the Wiimote acts as your sword. As such, swinging the Wiimote causes Link to attack, which sounds more immersive then it is since Link’s moves are canned and don’t resemble yours to any degree. Overall it works pretty well, and the fact that you can fire all the ranged weapons in the game by pointing the Wiimote feels quite intuitive.

Twilight Princess from an artistic standpoint is a beautiful game to look at. The vibrant land of Hyrule stands in stark contrast to the dark and very cool shadow realm. From a technical standpoint however, Twilight Princess isn’t quite as stunning as some of the other next gen titles currently out. Similarly while the music is as excellent as it’s ever been in the series, it lacks some of the orchestral umph that games like Final Fantasy XII possess, not to mention the voice acting.

Largely, these are split hairs. Taken as the sum of its parts The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, is another excellent game in an excellent series. It’s hard to fault it for not moving beyond its tried and true formula when that formula has produced so many good games. This is definitely a game that new Wii owners should think about picking up.

Eric Bain woke up in a nightclub bathroom with no memory, a terrible headache and hallucinations. No, he did not go overboard with alcohol and drugs — it’s just that turning into a vampire accompanies such symptoms. What this terrible transformation turned out to be for Eric, read in our review

The game was tested on PC

When DARK was first announced, the community accepted it with a certain amount of skepticism. Let’s not pull the cat by the tail and let’s face it: the miracle did not happen. Realmforge Studios stood in line with a huge galaxy of studios who wanted to jump above their heads, but ended up twisting their legs on landing.

⇡#Children of the bunkhouse

Many lovers of nightlife are probably familiar with the DARK plot firsthand. A nightclub toilet, a complete blackout and a terrible headache. And visual glitches in the form of a ghostly angel whispering a single name — Eric Bain. But the cause of such a deplorable state was not heavy psychotropic substances washed down with a good portion of strong alcohol, but the transformation into a vampire. Considering that the wonderful Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines began almost the same way, one could hope for the best. But you, dear readers, do not make our mistake, otherwise you risk being very disappointed. Better get ready for the worst.

As in the universe of «Masquerade», all the action takes place under the cover of night — the children of darkness hide their existence from ordinary people, and the hunters of evil spirits do not allow you to drink someone else’s blood in peace. But this world is dead, you absolutely do not believe in it. No elaboration or depth. Some rough strokes here and there, but in the end the whole picture does not add up. The developers either try to scare us with sick villains, or they tell absolutely unnecessary and boring stories through notes scattered across the levels.

Borrowing other people’s ideas and being able to apply them in your project is a certain talent. Ask Vigil Games with their Darksiders series. So the developers of DARK tried to use the best practices from eminent representatives of interactive entertainment. Redraw the world in your own way Vampire: The Masquerade failed. With the main character, subtly reminiscent of Max Payne, they also missed. Laconic and speaking name — yes. Sad story… from a certain point of view, too. Eric has lost everything — and therefore desperately rushes into the arms of trouble. And he constantly conducts an internal monologue, pouring out his soul to the player. Only the last one with probability 90% will not give a damn about it.

This club will become our home for two thirds of the game.

The twists and turns of the plot begin with the news that if Bane does not drink the blood of his creator or just an ancient and powerful vampire, then in a few days he will turn into a stupid ghoul. To this end, we break into all the noble representatives of the vampire family that live in the city. When you find out for the third time that “the princess is in another castle”, you don’t even know whether to cry or laugh from the helplessness of the screenwriters. And of course, «very unexpected» turns in the finale are attached.

Vampire vision is vital, you won’t get far without it

⇡#Squishy immortals

Of course, you can’t just go to the oldest vampires. First you have to fight your way through an army of cannon fodder. And not by brute force, but by using ingenuity — after all, we were promised an exciting RPG with stealth elements. Although it soon turns out that it is not that very exciting and certainly not an RPG. In the world of DARK, the children of the night are complete morons. Half of the clip immediately sends you to the last save. Taking this opportunity, we confess our hatred for game designers who allow you to save between checkpoints only twice. And since you have no idea how long the next section will be, accordingly, it is not at all clear when it is better to save.

But back to the actual gameplay. It’s useless to go ahead. Not only because you will die immediately, but also because of the complete lack of self-defense skills of the protagonist. He can only make a quick kill or drink blood. There is no combat system in principle, and, apparently, the status does not allow firing weapons. So you have to, bent over in three deaths, constantly hide behind shelters. In the shadows, oddly enough, it will not be possible to hide — opponents in DARK have absolute vision, but at the same time limited in distance. As in the first Metal Gear Solid, standing in the line of sight of the enemy, but at a certain distance, the hero can even dance a jig — the dummy will absolutely not care.

Can you count how many corpses there are?

Artificial intelligence is generally deprived of ingenuity. Enemies go exclusively along one route and do not react in any way to the loss of comrades. If they notice you, they will shoot and look exclusively at one point, which makes it an ideal opportunity to sneak up behind and kill one at a time. But what they lack in quality they sometimes make up for in quantity. There are so many guards at some locations that the whole game turns into a boring memorization of movement trajectories and calculation of intervals that allow you to run to the next shelter.

Only a set of vampire skills saves from a dislocated jaw in a fit of boredom. The only pity is that a couple of more or less interesting abilities will be pumped far from immediately. And only in the second half of the game does a decent set of skills appear: you can choke the enemy from afar, and instantly teleport with stunning all nearby opponents, and create distracting traps. When the hero finally becomes the hunter and not the prey, DARK can even be enjoyed. But not everyone can endure several hours of despondency for this. And the developers, as if on purpose, ruin the lives of users. From local control, you can sometimes go crazy trying to choose the right teleportation point. And boss battles, especially the final one, cause nothing but bewilderment.

The security guard in the background sees nothing suspicious in our actions

* * *

The last stab in the chest of the Realmforge Studios creation is delivered by the technical component. If the cell-shading technology still somehow masks the lack of polygons, then nothing can be done about the wretchedness of the animation. For example, when running, the main character does not even have an intermediate movement to change direction — Eric simply instantly turns his face in a certain direction. The process of drinking blood from a victim cannot be called anything other than comical, and it’s impossible to look at the facial expressions of the characters without tears in principle. About such a thing as directing, the developers have not heard either — local videos evoke memories of the games of the late nineties.

The most annoying thing is that the project had a good potential. A gloomy world, aggressive stealth, a huge scope for immersing the player in a harsh vampire story. But, unfortunately, the developers implemented any aspect or idea either crookedly or not at all.

Advantages:

  • after all, this is not «Twilight»;
  • becomes more or less interesting to play towards the end.

Weaknesses:

  • mostly boring gameplay;
  • mediocre appearance;
  • nightmare animation;
  • a flat plot, two-thirds of which resemble the adventures of Mario in terms of intrigue;
  • elaboration of the world is absent in principle.
Graphics Medium quality models that look good in cell-shading. But the terrible animation of everything and everything, multiplied by the general poverty and static environment, paints a very sad picture. 5
Sound The only catchy melody is one song constantly playing in the club. The rest of the soundtrack is dull ambient. And the voice acting, even the original one, is performed at the level of mediocre domestic localizations. 5
Single game Monotonous, routine stealth to the point of yawning. The most boring plot and the complete absence of interesting situations are unlikely to allow you to get to the final credits. 4
Collective play Not available.
General impression It’s better to spend your time on something more interesting, like some game classic or a recent blockbuster that you missed. And even if you’re a fan of vampires, it’s better to run the imperishable Bloodlines again. 4

Why you should watch the first Twilight and why the sequels are good

Roman Persianinov

told about garlic vampires

Author’s profile

I clearly remember how in my childhood everyone around laughed at «Twilight».

Friends in the yard said that this is a movie for girls, and it’s disgusting for boys to watch it. Snide memes about the main characters were popular on the Internet. Kristen Stewart was ridiculed for her bad acting — allegedly her heroine constantly walks with a detached expression on her face, and Robert Pattinson was teased for too sugary image of a romantic vampire. And many more wanted him to meet Blade, the bloodsucker hunter from Marvel comics.

For this reason, I never got acquainted with the films of the vampire saga. And only many years later, when the controversy between fans and opponents of «Twilight» had already subsided, I finally watched the first part. And this fall, together with the girl, he organized a movie marathon and appreciated the entire series. And didn’t regret it.

First of all, it helped to take my mind off the news. Secondly, it’s too early for «Harry Potter» — it’s for the New Year. Thirdly, Twilight is not just a romantic story about vampires, but a whole cultural phenomenon. And no one should be ashamed of the love for the vampire saga. Especially in 2022.

Why Twilight became popular

The plot of the movie saga is based on the novels of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. According to the writer, one day she had a dream: in it, a handsome young vampire communicated with an ordinary girl. He confessed his feelings and tried to explain how hard it was for him to fight the desire to kill his beloved. Prior to this, Mayer was not too fond of stories about vampires, but when she woke up, she decided to finish the plot she saw in a dream.

Two years later, the first Twilight appeared on bookstore shelves. The novel was an incredible success: the romantic story of the handsome vampire Edward Cullen and the 17-year-old schoolgirl Bella Swan became a bestseller around the world.

Mayer followed with three more books about the couple’s adventures: New Moon in 2006, Eclipse in 2007 and Breaking Dawn in 2008. In total, more than 100 million copies of the books have been sold. Journalists nicknamed Meyer «American JK Rowling». In 2020, the writer released the novel «Midnight Sun», where the plot of the first «Twilight» is from the perspective of Edward Cullen. In 2021, the book was published in Russian.

/fantastic-beasts-3-recap/

Fantastic Beasts 3 was not released in Russia. What do critics write about the film and what is the plot?

Mayer’s main target audience was teenage girls. Many noted that they were pleased to associate themselves with Bella. An inconspicuous girl falls in love with a gallant handsome vampire who plays the piano beautifully, always comes to the rescue and at the same time remains vulnerable and sincere.

The first Twilight movie came out in 2008. The film adaptation was also a success: with a budget of 37 million dollars, the picture earned more than 400 million. Naturally, the producers immediately took up the continuation. The success of books, and then films helped Twilight become an important cultural phenomenon in the 2010s.

Why the first Twilight is a great movie

The plot is simple: 17-year-old Bella Swan moves in with her sheriff father in Forks and tries to adapt to her new environment. At school, she meets a handsome student, Edward Cullen. At first, he avoids the girl, but then saves her life a couple of times, confesses his sympathy and reveals the secret: Edward is a vampire doomed to eternal life in the body of a 17-year-old boy.

Edward has superpowers: super speed, superhuman strength and the ability to read minds. He lives in a family of peaceful vampires who feed only on the blood of animals, not humans. The lovers face a difficult task — to maintain their relationship and not reveal the truth about the Cullen family to people.

10 tender series about love

Heroes are deeper than you might think. Let’s say that Bella comes to her father — a good-natured and friendly sheriff. It is difficult for him to communicate with teenagers, and yet the hero is struggling to establish contact with his withdrawn daughter. It turns out so-so: he asks inappropriate or stupid questions and offers to take pepper spray on a date.

The sincerity and friendliness of the character is captivating, especially when Bella lashes out at her father in the heat of her emotions. At that moment, I felt sincerely sorry for him. He’s not perfect, but he’s not a villain either. The heroine’s father clearly does not deserve such an attitude.

Bella herself seemed to me a non-standard heroine for a romantic movie. She is languid, always immersed in her thoughts and keeps to herself. He also uses sarcasm as a defense against the outside world. And Kristen Stewart perfectly embodies the image of a closed, unsociable and at the same time brave teenager.

“Sleeped for a month with the lights on”: horror movies that will definitely scare you

Bella is a loner. She covers her insecurities with jokes and does not seek to please people

Other heroines would probably wait until a guy they like speaks to them. Bella, on the other hand, takes the initiative herself and does not hesitate to express claims to Edward in person. In one of the scenes, a friend complains to the heroine that the guy does not invite her to the school ball. In response, Bella gives unexpected advice: «Call him yourself.»

Edward is different. His ideality irritates from the first seconds. And not at all because I’m not as cool as a 90-year-old vampire with the appearance of a Hollywood star. And not because my girlfriend was sighing and asking why I can’t look and dress like Pattinson’s character. It’s just that in contrast to Bella, he seems too flat. A hero without flaws.

We watched the third season of Love. Death. Robots. Here are the series you need to see and you

Over time, I realized that Edward was not to be taken seriously. After all, his image is the hero of the classic novels of the Victorian era transferred to modern times. He will always come to the rescue, protect, please and protect the dream of his beloved, sitting on the windowsill in her room. Literally a knight on a white horse. This thought helped me not to roll my eyes every time Edward appeared in the frame.

The film has excellent directing and catchy style. The first part of the saga was shot by Katherine Hardwicke, and she best conveyed the atmosphere of «Twilight». The film is painted in cold blue tones. This emphasizes the mood of a bored Bella, living in a rainy city. Another thing is local forests. The green vegetation is eye-catching and soothing, while the mist between the trees adds to the mystical landscape. No wonder it is there that the most important romantic scenes between the characters take place.

Hardwick tried to visually diversify each dialogue. In one scene, she sends the heroes to the beach so that they can walk beautifully against the backdrop of the waves. In the other, it brings into the background a comic fight between minor characters so that the viewer does not get bored during the conversation.

Paphos and romance are served with a dose of self-irony. There are many funny scenes in the film — for example, the episode of Bella and Edward meeting. She enters the classroom, the guy, thanks to his sharp vampire scent, smells her. He has a desire to immediately pounce and drink the girl’s blood. To restrain himself, he pinches his nose with his hand, as if he is about to vomit. A confused Bella decides that she smells bad.

During his love confession, Edward refers to Bella as a «personal brand of heroin». It’s both ridiculous and brilliant at the same time.

My favorite scene is vampire baseball. The Cullen family gathers for a match in the woods. To the song Supermassive Black Hole by Muse, the heroes rush across the field at the speed of sound, make incredible throws and knock each other down in the air. I swear I’m ready to watch this episode again and again.

The surprises don’t end there. The film suddenly changes genre from melodrama to thriller: Bella is being hunted by a vampire killer, and the Cullens are trying to save her. The final scenes take place in a beautiful hall among large mirrors. The movie ends with the most spectacular fight in the entire saga.

It’s a cozy movie that helps you get distracted. In November 2022, Twilight turns 14 years old, but this movie is not outdated at all. For millions of viewers, it, like «Harry Potter», has become something like a relaxing therapeutic film: the heroes can handle all the difficulties, and the characters will definitely find their happiness.

«Krinzh — and that’s great»: what guilty pleasures are hard to admit

Even structurally, the film is similar to film adaptations of Rowling’s novels. Both here and there, the characters first try to find explanations for a series of strange events, and then fall into the world, which is found only in fairy tales.

But everything is not so simple here either. In Philosopher’s Stone, a young Potter becomes an aspiring wizard. Bella, in the first part, remains an ordinary person. And as a viewer, it is much more comfortable for me to study the world of vampires through the prism of human perception.

And yet, despite the gloomy tone, this is the most life-affirming story. At the beginning of the saga, Bella is shown as a lonely girl without clear goals in life, but by the end of the first part, the heroine finds a family: the Cullens accept her as their own. In addition, the girl falls in love and finds the meaning of life. She dreams of becoming a vampire so that she never returns to gray everyday life. Pure teenage escapism.

«Twilight» is a very family film, although at first glance you would not say so. Source: Summit Entertainment

What’s good about the rest of Twilight

It’s not an easy question. Each next episode of the series is noticeably worse than the previous one. Critics wrote about it and even the most devoted fans repeated it. Summit Entertainment was unable to reach an agreement with Hardwick due to demands to film the sequel as soon as possible. The company wanted the new part to be released to the cinema within a year after the original. The director was not satisfied with such harsh conditions.

The subsequent parts of «Twilight» lost their charm: the dialogues became flat, there were almost no remarkable directorial techniques left. And the plot got worse and worse. Watching the next four films is mentally and sometimes physically difficult. Nevertheless, I found arguments in their favor.

Movies help to better understand the feelings and fears of teenagers. In the second part, the authors explore the theme of depression: Edward, under mysterious circumstances, leaves Bella, and she loses the will to live.

6 phrases to calm a loved one in troubled times

A girl forgets about her friends, sits at the window all day and has nightmares. Then he almost dies after jumping off a cliff. She survives only thanks to her Indian friend Jacob. The film, as it were, appeals to its target audience: do not try to cope with injuries on your own — look for support in loved ones.

In two minutes, the authors effectively show Bella’s serious condition: months follow each other, but she doesn’t care about anything

Another important theme is Bella’s fear of getting old, because Edward will always be young. It is the teenage fear of growing up that motivates her to become a vampire. True, rebirth occurs only under the curtain of the fourth film, when Bella finds herself on the verge of life and death during childbirth.

The heroine’s pregnancy temporarily turns Twilight into a body horror, because the result of the love between a human and a vampire can kill a girl. The film tries to scare the viewer. The child, like an Alien, can escape from Bella at any moment. The girl is rapidly losing weight and weakening, and other heroes watch her fade away.

Fortunately, everything ends with a happy ending — a beautiful daughter is born to the couple. But more than one young lover of the vampire saga probably dreamed of nightmares involving a pregnant Bella. Because of the pregnancy story, my girlfriend hates this part of Twilight.

In addition, many will feel uneasy at the sight of a baby drawn on a computer. But if this spectacle fascinates you for some reason, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Russian comedy «Partner». There, a policeman performed by Sergei Garmash moves into a child. With all the consequences.

In the preview, an animatronic doll that was originally used in the movie. In the final version, she was replaced with a CGI baby. He is also in the video

The films are captivating with the story of the battles between vampire clans and werewolves. The first Twilight shows only three vampires who feed on humans and want to kill Bella. From the second part, the story takes on a larger scale. The heroes are in conflict with the powerful vampire clan Volturi.

In the third film, everything revolves around the upcoming battle between the Cullens and the «converts». This is the name given to rookie vampires who, due to the remaining human blood in their veins, have increased strength. To win, the Cullens team up with the local werewolf Indians.

The viewer is shown several spectacular battles with broken bones and severed heads. However, sometimes these scenes are too ridiculous: giant CGI wolves are strangely animated, and vampires during the fight look like they are taking exams at a ballet school.

But I still genuinely enjoyed vampire kung fu and giant wolves straight out of memes.

A full-scale battle with the Volturi takes place in the final part. The clan is about to unleash all its might on the Cullens, the heroes need allies. Among them are a couple of Russian vampires who dream of taking revenge on the «Italian scum», Amazons who can create illusions, Irish vampires and even the future star of the series «Mr. Robot» Rami Malek — in battle he uses the power of the elements. Thanks to new characters, the story takes on even greater scope, and the bored Cullen family temporarily fades into the background.

The final battle is spectacular and brutal. Key characters for the plot are mercilessly killed. The survivors become ferocious and immediately take revenge on their opponents. True, at the most crucial moment, the film blatantly deceives the viewer. I’ll do without spoilers, but the final plot twist really pissed me off. But despite this, we still got a soothing Hollywood happy ending.

📺 Advice S-F: which films with Pattinson and Stewart reveal their acting talent

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have long outgrown Twilight. Now both are filming in Hollywood hits, author films and have long established themselves as excellent actors.

Pattinson plays the roles of complex dramatic characters, now it’s hard to recognize him as that cutesy romantic vampire. Stewart also tries his hand at action movies, hippie dramas and gloomy films about the complexities of a woman’s fate. The actress has long distanced herself from the image of the lost Bella.

What to watch with Pattinson

Cosmopolis. Chamber drama about an American businessman. The hero played by Pattinson has earned all the money in the world, but feels only emptiness and apathy.

Rover. A brutal neo-western where Pattinson is not a handsome hero, but a loser and a coward surviving in a post-apocalyptic desert.

Good time. This time, Pattinson got the role of a small, efficient bandit. He drags his brother with mental disorders to rob a bank, and, of course, everything does not go according to plan. Pattinson portrays a gouging on the run — he is about to be caught by the police.

/how-i-watched-batman/

High Society. A team of astronaut prisoners was sentenced to work on a space station next to a black hole for the rest of their lives. Pattinson’s character, like other heroes, has no chance of escape. One can only watch how the entire crew is gradually dying.

Lighthouse. In the late 19th century, a young lumberjack played by Pattinson gets a job as a lighthouse keeper’s assistant. Only a superstitious old man lives with him on an island far from civilization — he is played by Willem Dafoe. The gloomy atmosphere and strange visions gradually drive the characters crazy, and they take up arms against each other. Through Pattinson’s surreal performance, the film explores the themes of alcoholism, guilt, masculinity and loneliness.

What to watch with Stewart

Panic Room. Very young Stewart in her first important role — and immediately in the thriller by David Fincher. She plays a teenage girl who, together with her mother, hides from robbers in a secret room. The role of the parent is played by the star of «The Silence of the Lambs» Jodie Foster.

«Personal Shopper». A slow and beautiful drama where Stewart plays a stylist from Paris. A girl visits a mansion from her childhood and suddenly feels someone’s invisible presence. The ghost does not give answers, but everything points to the fact that this is her dead brother.

“At once the day doesn’t seem so bad”: what films and series save from the blues

“Ultra-Americans”. Action comedy starring Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, the star of Zombieland and The Social Network. Their heroes fight bandits and intelligence agents. An excellent buddy movie about how a gouging guy, not without the help of a girl, learns to believe in himself.

On the road. Adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s autobiographical novel about his travels in America 1950s. Stewart plays a smiling 16-year-old girl. She laughs a lot, has sex and struggles with inner fears.

Spencer. A drama about a few days in the life of Princess Diana. She is going to annul her marriage to Prince Charles and leave the royal family, although everyone around dissuades the girl. Perhaps Stewart’s best performance, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
