HIS HD 4850 IceQ 4 1GB(256bit) GDDR3 PCIe

Product Advantage

HIS IceQ 4 is the 4th generation of IceQ cooling technology, which is endorsed by the media worldwide. Thanks to the newly designed double-slot fans and dual heatpipes, HIS IceQ 4 effectively dissipate the heat from the GPU, thus enabling it for high levels of performance. It cools down the GPU temperature dramatically when compare with the reference cooler, allow you to maximize your overclocking potential. What’s more? The ultra silent and durable fan delivers ultra-quiet and stable gaming environment for enthusiast gamer.

Heat transfers rapidly out of GPU and reduces temperature faster. Cool down the droom to overclock and run chip faster; provides more headroom to overclock and run faster. Operates with lower noise level than original cooler.
  1. Efficient transfer of heat outside of computer case
    Cool air is drawn from both sides of the fan and hot air is forced out of the computer case. This ensures effective cooling when there is another card in front blocking the fan inlet.
  2. Crossfire Advantage
    For CrossFire setup, the fan ensures effective cooling with another card blocking at front.
  3. Silent and durable fan
    Significantly reduce noise level and extend service life

Faster — Heat transfers rapidly out of GPU and reduces temperature faster

In order to improve the power capacity, we have changed from simple extrusion heatsink to stacked fins with bigger surface area to improve the heat transfer efficiency significantly. Thicker spreader and heatpipes are also used to allow a more even heat distribution among the fins. Spreader is the metal base of the heatsink.

» And the winner is HIS HD4850 IceQ4 Turbo. Among the other cards, only IceQ4 cooling system manages to lower the heat of 4850 GPU to a level which we have been expecting for a time. HIS has the best solution for cooling and power consumption with » — Darkhardware.com

» The cooling effect is much better than the reference cooler, allow you to maximize your overclocking potential. « — PC Market

Cooler — Efficient transfer of heat outside of computer case:

Cool air is drawn from both sides of the fan and hot air is forced out of the computer case. This ensures effective cooling when there is another card in front blocking the fan inlet, such as in CrossFire setup. Memory and GPU heatsinks are completely separated, preventing any heat transfer from GPU to memory. Memory heatsink is actively cooled by air stream from main cooler.

Cooling Performance — IceQ 4 vs Single Slot Cooler

By expelling the hot air, IceQ 4 removes all the heat generated by the GPU out of the computer chassis, prevents the hot air from accumulating inside and enhancing the overall stability. The more crowded the chassis, the greater will be the impact. Following charts illustrate the impact on cooler performance:

Cool air is drawn from both sides of the fan and hot air is forced out of the computer case. This ensures effective cooling when there is another card in front blocking the fan inlet, such as in CrossFire setup.

The demonstration shows that the IceQ 4 does outperform the 3rd party cooler in closed environment. The improvement in cooling effect is even more noticeable when a board is placed in front of the graphics card, such as in Crossfire setup.

Quieter — Significantly reduce noise level and extend service life

» HIS has done an excellent job on the 4850IceQ4 — besides the quality of the card the fabulous cooler ICeQ4 is efficient and silent and the factory overclock offers a fantastic performance. » — ForumPC (Brazil)

» With the ICEQ4 cooler you can expect roughly 40-41 dB at peak GPU usage (fan RPM will be higher when GPU is hotter » — Guru3D

» HIS by tooling up their IceQ4 Cooler not only made their card silent but were able to do that and make the card operate some 20 degrees cooler than others. » — Overclockercafe.com

HIS IceQ is also UV sensitive, enhancing the gamers’ UV light case

» As stated, the plastic cooler is UV reflective, throw in a 5 USD UV cold-cathode and you can get that nice dark ocean blue thing going on. The ICEQ4 cooler is both silent and offers much better than reference cooling performance. Next to that, it looks quite nice as well, throw in a little cold-cathode UV light and the thing will shine up like it’s radiated .. lovely to look at. » — From Guru3D.com

The new graphics cards from AMD-ATI have rightfully gained their popularity due to their excellent price/performance ratio. Currently, you can easily find on sale accelerators based on RV770 PRO/XT chips, produced by well-known brands under their own trademark, both in standard and original versions.

ASUSTeK Computer was one of the first among the leading manufacturers of graphics adapters to introduce AMD-ATI Radeon HD 4850 video cards to the market, which differ in design from the reference ones. In one of our reviews, we have already tested the «reference» video accelerator based on the RV770 PRO chip from ASUS, namely the ASUS EAh5850/HTDI/512M. Today we will pay attention to the original model, which is equipped with 1 GB of video memory and an ASUS Glaciator cooler. So, let’s get acquainted with the ASUS EAh5850/HTDI/1G/A video card.

As a result, judging by the characteristics, our accelerator differs from the reference ATI-AMD Radeon HD 4850 only in the amount of video memory used .

The video card comes in a large double carton box that opens like a book. The appearance and design of the box has not changed compared to a similar adapter ASUS EAh5850 512 MB. As before, black and orange colors symbolize that the accelerator belongs to the AMD-ATI Radeon family. At the bottom of the front side of the box, there is usually the name of the video card, as well as some of its features. This time, the main focus, oddly enough, is on the amount of video memory used.

The back of the package describes the features of the graphics accelerator, recommended system requirements, and briefly describes proprietary technologies, which can be found in more detail on the official website of ASUSTeK Computer. It is interesting that there is no description of the minimum system requirements in Russian, and in the usual place of the description there is only an empty area.

The sticker on the end of the box shows the serial number and batch number of the EAh5850/HTDI/1G/A video adapter.

The delivery set is similar to that of ASUS EAh5850 512 MB. But it will not be superfluous to repeat. So, in addition to the video card itself, the package includes:

  • Adapter from Molex to 6-pin video card power connector;
  • S-Video to component adapter;
  • DVI to D-Sub adapter;
  • DVI to HDMI adapter;
  • CrossFire Bridge;
  • Driver CD;
  • CD with electronic documentation;
  • Brief instructions for installing a video card.

Already familiar to everyone is the presence of an adapter from DVI to HDMI, although quite recently the manufacturer has especially focused on this the attention of buyers.

Having familiarized ourselves with the package, let’s move on to a closer acquaintance with the accelerator.

In order to remove the intrigue, we inform you that all the «originality» consists only in using its own cooling system and equipping the accelerator with 1 GB of video memory. The printed circuit board itself has not undergone the slightest change and is made according to the reference design.

At the top of the board are two MIO ports for connecting multiple video cards in CrossFireX mode. The cooling system, as mentioned above, is represented by the branded ASUS Glaciator cooler, which is quite well known in consumer circles and does not need advertising. Using this cooler should have a positive effect on overclocking, lowering the temperature of the GPU, as well as getting rid of unnecessary noise.

This cooler looks a little larger than usual. Presumably, this was done for better «coverage» of the memory chips by the radiator and their better cooling, although this is just guesswork.

The power subsystem is quite simple. All power elements are placed on the front of the board. The video card is equipped with one six-pin connector for connecting additional power.

According to the specification, the tested adapter requires a 450W power supply, and when combining two such accelerators in CrossFire mode, a 600W power supply is required.

This video card lacks cooling of the power batteries, which can negatively affect both the stability of the accelerator in the overclocked state and negatively affect the overclocking itself.

The power connector for the cooling system cooler, like the «reference» model, is located in the lower right corner of the printed circuit board. The good news is that it is possible to control the fan speed.

The ASUS EAh5850 1024 MB accelerator on the interface panel has two DVI-I ports, as well as an S-Video TV output.

Paying attention to the reverse side of the video adapter, we finally made sure that the printed circuit board was made according to the «reference design». This is evidenced by the holes present for installing a reference cooling system.

The video card under test has two diagnostic LEDs D1601 and D1602. Based on the description, the red glow of the D1601 LED indicates that the critical temperature for the graphics core has been reached, and the D1602 LED indicates that there is no additional power supply for the video card.

The total amount of video memory is 1024 MB, in fact, this is the most important and, perhaps, the only difference between the tested accelerator and the «reference» models, if we do not take into account the cooling system.

The board contains Qimonda HYB18h2G321AF-10 memory chips. The last two digits in the name indicate an access time of 1.0 ns. The nominal clock frequency in this case is 1000 MHz, the effective one is 2000 MHz. As you can see, the margin for memory overclocking is small, since the clock frequency of the video memory of our test sample is 993 MHz (effective 1986 MHz). Recall that we saw the same memory chips on the Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 1GB video card. Data exchange, as before, is carried out over a 256-bit bus.

Now let’s look at the specifications again using the GPU-Z utility.

The GPU-Z utility has correctly identified the 55nm RV770 PRO GPU with 956 million transistors, 625MHz for the graphics core and 993MHz for the video memory.
