Frequently named one of the best video games of all time, the idea of offering a time travel storyline and thus multiple endings was revolutionary for 1995, combined with the now well-known JRPG themes like friendship and overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds that make Final Fantasy so epic.

Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

They’re the kind of people who pretend to not care for a very long time, but who still eventually become the unwilling hero of the people. Vesperia’s Yuri Lowell is such a guy, a dry-witted grump with a big heart. You’ll love following him around the world of Terca Lumireis, and once you’re done there are many other Tales games with their very own story to discover. In another similarity to Final Fantasy, each Tales entry tries something new with the franchise, to varying degrees of success.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

If you enjoy open-world style JRPGs, Xenoblade Chronicles does that admittedly even better than late adopter Final Fantasy XV, as the world of Alrest is simply a treat to explore. Fear not, you don’t have to have played the first Xenoblade Chronicles to start with this one, and should you want to, a remaster of the original Wii U game will land this year. Xenoblade Chronicles is another one of those JRPGs with an epic story that’s at times equal parts impressive and just that bit too much. It features the classic villain hellbent on destroying the world, but of course the game is actually way more intricate than that.
Lost Odyssey

After leaving Square Enix, Final fantasy creator Hinorobu Sakaguchi formed his own company called Mistwalker to be able to try new things.
This one is Mistwalker at its best, but arguably most traditional — using a turn-based battle system, emulating the cool, grown-up look of characters from Final Fantasy games like 8 and 10, and a setting combining the medieval with the first inklings of technological advance. The story is equally as heart-warming as Final fantasy often is, but overall less convoluted.
Secret of Mana

The Mana series is another of Square’s early franchises that made it synonymous with great RPGs. The story of Secret of Mana remains immensely engaging, the music is lovely, the world is large, and it’s just one of the best games of its kind. Just do yourself a favour and play the original (available on Nintendo Switch) as part of the Secret of Mana collection rather than the 2018 remaster which you can get on PC and PS4.
I Am Setsuna

The Last Remnant

This is Final Fantasy with large-scale battles where you control unions. The best games in the Final Fantasy series on PC
If you haven’t heard of the Final Fantasy series, you probably live in a deep forest. But this is one of the pillars of the JRPG genre. It was she who gave us the hairstyles of the protagonists sticking out in all directions, huge swords and epic boss fights. And while nothing beats the original console experience, many of the games in the series have been ported to PC.
The Final Fantasy series contains many spin-offs, remasters, remakes, re-releases, compilations, released on a variety of platforms.
We will not cover absolutely all titles of the franchise, but will focus on the most significant of them. Since the original games are often no longer available for purchase, we have left links to remasters, remakes and re-releases available in digital stores, adapted for modern gaming devices.
Final Fantasy (1987)

One of the most significant early console RPGs, having a strong influence on the development and popularization of the genre. Of course, jRPGs came out before Final Fantasy, but this game turned out to be more interesting and deeper than its competitors, which allowed it to take a leading position.
The game area was presented from above, and the players had to assemble a team to destroy the four elementals. Such a simple plot was backed up by an exciting story and well-developed turn-based combat.
You can touch the classics even now: Square Enix recently released a re-release of the first parts of the series for modern platforms, including PC.

Final Fantasy II (1988)

A year after the release of Final Fantasy followed by a sequel to the game. However, it can only be called a sequel nominally, because the plot has nothing to do with the original project. This practice was also used in the subsequent serial parts of the line: their events unfold in completely different fantasy worlds, with new main characters, and they intersect with each other with only a few elements, such as the presence of funny chocobo creatures and a character named Sid in each of the universes.
In the second part, the players took control of the rebels, waging war against the empire that invaded their country.
Here, the developers introduced bold innovations — for example, they abolished the pumping of heroes, instead adding the development of characteristics depending on the frequency of their use, and also added a dialogue system that was not in the original game.

Final Fantasy III (1990)

Threequel storyline was dedicated to the adventures of a group of heroes who received supernatural powers. In addition, for the first time in the series, the ability to summon powerful creatures appeared here.
Final Fantasy III received high critical acclaim, although some were reserved in their conclusions. The game was sold in huge circulation and was released on many platforms, including mobile and PC.

The PC version is a direct port of the DS remake, one of those rare occasions when both fans and critics alike praised all the additions and changes made to the game. The graphics matched the tone of the game, and the gameplay for the first time introduced to the world what became the hallmark of the series: the Active Time Battle system.

One day, a young traveler meets a princess who is looking for her father, who has gone to the vault of one of the four elemental crystals that maintain balance in the world. The heroes learn that the crystal is destroyed, and now they have to do everything to save humanity.

The strongest part of Final Fantasy VI is its plot, which revolves around the mysterious Terra Branford, who enters into an underground resistance not so much to fight the rotten Gestahlian Empire and the disgusting buffoon Kefka, but to learn about her past.
While the sixth installment in the series is considered a classic by critics and fans alike, its PC port is arguably the weakest on our entire list.
Gamers complained about the overly «cute» reworking of the game’s art and problems with the interface design. Fortunately, thanks to the mods that have appeared, FFVI has got rid of many of its shortcomings and is quite worthy of attention even now, as one of the pillars of the series.

Cloud Strife is a genetically enhanced mercenary working for the AVALANCHE group. When it turns out that Rufus Shinra has kidnapped Iris, and Sephiroth is alive, AVALANCHE decides to save the girl and stop the villains.
Part 7 has the most cult status of any game on this list. Cloud Strife and Sephiroth are arguably the most recognizable characters in the entire franchise, and FFVII’s plot contains some of the most famous twists in the entire gaming industry.

Tidus is a blitzball star, the whole world lay at his feet.
..until the apocalypse happened. Saved from a dying city, the young man found himself in the distant future, where he met the apprentice summoner Yuna, whom he swore to protect in her journey.
Final Fantasy X was the first game in the series to earn its popularity with a sequel. It may not have the best dialogue, but the world and characters are interesting enough to beg for more. It is full of mini-games and side quests that enhance the player’s immersion.

Final Fantasy XI was the first online game in the series. And for the first time during the battle, the characters did not move to a separate screen, but fought in the same place where they met the enemy. Otherwise, this is a typical MMORPG with server-side exploration, character leveling, battles, and an auction. It’s worth noting that the game is still alive and Square Enix hasn’t even switched it to a free distribution model!

The developers have changed the mood of the sequel, making it lighter than the dark original. In addition, the game was characterized by non-linear progression, and some of its chapters could be skipped at all (although you should not do this to achieve a better ending). Finally, all three protagonists of Final Fantasy X-2 turned out to be girls — with a large selection of outfits for them.

XII has become the part that fans of the series missed, who fell in love with the «top ten» or enthusiastically waiting for the thirteenth game. Nevertheless, The Zodiac Age has a deep story and innovative gameplay that eventually evolved into the open world combat system familiar to us from later games. The twelfth part took the necessary risk, refreshing the series and allowing it to reach its current heights.

Final Fantasy XIII (2009)

It’s like your Frozen in the franchise — it was everywhere, even two sequels appeared. Despite its popularity, many gamers found the game’s linearity to be a major drawback.
