The Final Fantasy XIII HD Project

NEW: Version 4.0.0 of this mod now upgrades some of the main character models in a similar fashion to the mod HD Models+.  The specific models chosen were for full compatibility with the game (not necessarily the best looking).  The models used are the ultimate models for Lightning (original hair), Sazh, Hope, Vanille and Fang.  If you wish to use any of the other possible models for these characters (alternate models, HD Snow, Lightning HQ hair, sculpted, etc.), they are available using the HD Models+ mod which can be run after this install.   HD Models+ is no longer required to improve the models if you just want to play the game with the better models and the original look (outfits).

When Final Fantasy XIII first came out in 2009 the visual quality was very good for that time period.  Over the years, however, modern game graphic quality has improved tremendously but even with the advent of the game on the PC, the visuals were hardly improved from the original.  This mod attempts to correct this oversight.  This project works on improving the textures in the game, most notably the environmental textures but also some of the NPC, Eidolons and weapons.  In addition to the mod itself, there is a .PDF included that details settings that can be used on some NVIDIA cards to further improve the visual quality, especially at above the 1080p.  There may be equivalent settings on AMD Radeon cards, but we did not have access to any so we could not test.  This document details how to set up the LOD (level of detail) to a negative value, forcing the graphics subsystem to choose higher resolution mipmaps.  This is similar to what was done on the XBox One X to improve the quality, however in this mod, we also provide many additional higher quality textures.   This LOD change can be used to improve the game quality even without this mod.  Note that negative LOD can cause aliasing in some cases.  If you have the choice of using DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) or negative LOD, DSR is probably the better option.

A few comparison images taken at 4k have been uploaded to show the difference.  While the .jpg format does eliminate some of the improved detail, it is still visible.  In the first image of a close up of the bark on a tree in the Sunleth Waterscape, you can see the increased sharpness and detail in the bark.  In the second image which is a split into 4 sections (original / HD / HD / original), if you compare the detail in the flower in the two left images as well as the forest in the background, there is an improvement in the clarity and detail.  Likewise in the two pictures to the right, the rock formations and grass, even in the distance, show more detail and are not as blurred. The third one is of the Yaschas Massif.  The final one is Fang with her Bladed Lance.   Note the text on the lance along with the designs on the haft.  This image also shows the difference between the base model and what is loaded with «Model Swap HD».  The difference between Fang’s hair and sari between the two images is striking.

Cautionary Note: This mod pushes the limits of the game engine and its interface with the graphics system.  There is no guarantee that this mod will work with all graphics cards (the minimum graphics card we tested had 4GB of VRAM).  During development numerous game crashes occurred and a significant amount of work was done to determine causes and modify the mod sufficiently to eliminate the issues that were found.  At this point, there are no known game issues using our test hardware.  However, the testing was limited as we are not able, due to time requirements, to run multiple times through the entire game or have extended play sessions.  So the short of it is “Use at your own risk.”  There is an uninstall option, but having your own backup copies of the game files, or willing to take the time to have Steam verify the integrity of your files to get back to a base game may be a better option.   Should you encounter a crash, and it repeats either at the same place or after about the same amount of play time, please post your issue with as much detail as possible to help us troubleshoot the issue.  Also include your specific hardware setup including main memory, graphic card model, graphic memory and any mods you are running as we suspect many of these crashes are due to memory management issues within the game and system.

Many players do not have any issues using this mod, however if you experience random crashes during gameplay, it is recommended to use FF13Fix.  The FF13Fix now has the capability of allowing the 4GB patch to work.  Implementing the 4GB patch should resolve most (if not all) issues.  See the instructions in the FF13Fix on how to enable this feature.

Installation:  Unzip the files into the directory of your choice although not in the game directory itself.  If you use the “HD Model+” mod, then installing them in the same directory is recommended as they will be able to share game files.    No matter where you install the files, run the batch file “_FFXIII HD Project.bat” file.  You will be asked what you wish to do (several install/uninstall options – recommended to just “Install All HD Textures”).  Once answered, it will begin a lengthy process of updating the game files.  This process will take between 10-45 minutes depending on your machine, specifically your hard drive R/W speed.  SSD drives will go much quicker, laptop hard drives, slower.  Informational messages are shown during the process.  Once the process is complete, you can start the game.  All previous save files will utilize the upgraded textures.

Q/A:

  •   Will this mod work on AMD Radeon graphics cards?

It should.  There is nothing in the mod itself that should prevent this, although we did not have the hardware to test.

  • Will this mod work on graphic cards with less than 4 GB VRAM?

Most likely.   We have reports of cards with only 2 GB working fine.  Give it a try.  If it doesn’t work, you can always uninstall the mod.

  • I don’t see any difference in the visual quality.  What’s wrong?

As long as the mod seemed to install correctly, then probably nothing.  The visual improvement depends on where you are.  Some textures have a much bigger jump in quality than others.  Places where you should notice a difference is where there is writing present, such as on Fang’s bladed lance, or signs.  Also on Gran Pulse, rock formations, plants and grass should show significant improvement.  Higher resolutions will show more improvement.

  • place or item xyz is still fuzzy or looks bad, can you improve it?

Some things in the environment have not been updated.  For example, the pulse Fal’Cie in the Hanging Edge has not been touched as it is part of a different game file so it still has the original quality.   It may be possible to upgrade that down the road.  But if there is a specific area, item or person that doesn’t look good, let us know.  Maybe we can do something about it.

Test Hardware:
For reference, the following systems were use for testing.
Dell 5577 Laptop with NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics.  (1080p only)
Desktop with an 8GB NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphics card.  16 GB RAM (1080p & 4K)
Dell laptop with NVIDIA GTX 2060 graphics (4K)
AMD Phenom II X6 with a NVIDIA 4GB GTX 1050 TI graphics card.  16 GB RAM (1080p & 4K)

Best Mods For Final Fantasy XIII (All Free To Download) – FandomSpot

Preference and experience play a huge role in picking a favorite Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy XIII was a great starting point for newer fans, as it focused more on linear gameplay and was the first title bringing the series onto the PS3.

Granted, FF13 came out quite a while ago. So you might want to change up your next playthrough with some mods.

And if you’re looking to jump back into FFXIII with a fresh face, here are some of the best mods to check out.

10. The FF XIII HD Project

Check Out This Mod

While FF13 saw a later release for PC, mod team NGS still didn’t feel that enough attention was put into improving the graphics.

So they took it upon themselves to create the FF XIII HD Project.

The mod is still a work in progress, with the most recent update being released just last month. But the results are already stunning.

Currently, environmental textures along with a few NPCs and weapons have been given visual upgrades, making the game look much better at 1080p and 4k. And there’s a lot more planned here, too.

Keep an eye on this mod because it’s getting frequent updates.

9. HD Models Plus

Check Out This Mod

While the FF XIII HD Project is still being worked on, you’re going to want to give the character models an upgrade as well.

HD Models Plus is a great way to do exactly that.

It allows you to swap in the high-quality character models that were initially only intended to be used for cutscenes.

In doing so, all your favourite characters like Lightning, Fang, Snow, and the rest of the gang will be looking much better than ever before.

And the creators of this mod even made what they call “ultimate models” which are even better than the ones originally included for cutscenes.

This is taking HD to the next level.

You’re definitely going to enjoy re-playing FF13 with this level of detail.

8. FF XIII HD Full Motion Video

Check Out This Mod

With modding you can give all the full motion videos in FFXIII upgrades, all with another graphics-focused mod from Team NGS.

FF XIII HD Full Motion Video replaces all cutscenes in the game with 1080p alternatives.

The original game offered the cutscenes in 720p so this is definitely an improvement. And they don’t just look like resized videos, definitely not at a glance.

While the modder put lots of effort into rescaling the videos, the drawback is that file sizes will now be quite large at 6GB each. This is mostly from limitations in encoding 1080p FMVs.

If you have the disk space available, I’d still recommend installing this. Especially if the plot of FF13 is one of your favorite parts of the game.

7. Clean ReShade Preset

Check Out This Mod

Now if you’re looking for a more expansive graphical upgrade, you might want to include Clean ReShaded Preset in your mod list.

Clean ReShade Preset provides a cleaner and crisper image, reducing the blurriness and dull coloring of vanilla.

The mod also adds a few modern visual effects like ambient occlusions to further improve graphics overall.

What’s even better about this mod is that it has been tested with both the FFXIII Project and Model Swap HD mods, so you shouldn’t experience any issues running them alongside each other.

6. Louder Music

Check Out This Mod

It seems many fans had minor complaints with the volume of the background music in FFXIII.

I myself have become nitpicky with this, as most games nowadays offer more control over in-game audio settings.

Well if you’re like modder InAutumn and want to enjoy the background music some more, you’re going to want to get this mod.

It simply increases the volume of all music in the game. You’ll be able to hear everything much better.

A must-have for fans of the FF13 OST.

5. Hair Colors

Check Out This Mod

There are some neat little customization mods out there, if you know where to look. These let you change up a few design choices, depending how you want your rag-tag gang of characters to appear.

The Hair Colors mod by MJB is one of these alteration mods, letting you change hair colors for the six main characters in the game.

You’ll be able to choose among a selection of predefined colors, or create your own with the RGB settings offered in the mod UI.

4. Custom Weapons

Check Out This Mod

We’ve ranked all the best weapons you could get in FF13, and trust me there’s a lot. But sometimes the vanilla designs just aren’t enough.

Custom Weapons, again created by MJB, gives you complete control of weapon design in Final Fantasy XIII.

What it does is unlock & alter six unused weapons that are already found in the game files.

This way you’ll be able to create completely customized weapons for each of the six characters in the game. You could keep the original unused weapons, or alter the designs to style them however you want.

You’ll even be able to assign attributes to each weapon to better suit your play style.

For hardcore fans, this is a must-have mod.

3. Crystarium Editing

Check Out This Mod

FF13 uses the Crystarium System for character progression. It feels like an upgraded sphere grid with cooler graphics.

Basically, each character is assigned a Crystarium where you determine which stats & bonuses each character gains with each level. Customization is always appreciated in FF titles.

Well the Crystarium Editing mod gives you complete control over the Crystarium system, allowing you to make edits through a simple excel sheet provided with the mod files.

You’ll be able to swap nodes around, as well as change bonus and CP cost values.

This takes cheating to a whole new level, my friends.

In addition to all of that, you can even add some abilities that aren’t available to certain characters in the vanilla game.

Hack your way to some easy glory or make the game insanely more challenging, all up to you.

2. Gameplay Tweaks and Hard Mode

Check Out This Mod

If you’ve finished a playthrough or two of FFXIII and are looking for an enhanced experience for your next run, well you’re looking at a mod that can help.

Gameplay Tweaks and Hard Mode is a mod that changes things up a bit. You know, to keep the game fresh.

Changes include higher level caps for tier 3 weapons, Cystarium modifications, and a few changes to some of each character’s default abilities.

This mod also includes a “Hard Mode”, which combines a number of different mods to give you more of a challenge.

Absolutely worth trying out because you get a lot with just this one mod.

1. FF13 Rebalanced – True Enemies of Cocoon

Check Out This Mod

Now if you’re looking for an even tougher FF13 playthrough, you should absolutely check this out.

FF13 Rebalanced makes the game more challenging by giving enemies higher stats, which requires a more tactical approach to combat.

The mod also features an overhauled Cystarium system to further mix things up.

You’ll now be able to assign characters different roles that weren’t options in the base game, so it’s not all about making the AI tougher!

This one’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a more seasoned FFXIII fan.

Final Fantasy XIII — Gambling

With the release of each new game from the Final Fantasy series, especially active players are sure to crusade against it in order to prove to everyone else that the new «Final Fantasy» is their legacy worse than the previous ones. An occupation as meaningless as the disputes of blunt-pointed and pointed-pointed. Final Fantasy is never good or bad. She either falls in love with herself from the first frames, or from the very first frames she makes herself hate. This is the peculiarity of the series: it is impossible to remain indifferent to it. If it’s already hooked, the magic happening on the other side of the screen is breathtaking and goosebumps run down the back. And if not, it is perceived as a personal insult, the tragic destruction of a castle in the air, built during a long wait for the next fairy tale. From Final Fantasy XIII is now the same story.

Throwing through life

The mark l’Cie on the thigh of the youngest heroine of the game will often serve as a pretext for jokes and embarrassing situations. Oh those Japanese!

But this time the arguments and gossip are much louder than usual. To better understand the situation, you should look at the evolutionary path of the series. For many years, up to the tenth part, the game told the same story about saving the world, but each time — in a completely new universe invented from scratch, with different characters and under different circumstances. The gameplay remained unchanged, only the role-playing system gave a slight roll in one direction or the other. Serious changes happened only to the twelfth part of the series. Final Fantasy suddenly shifted its focus from story to gameplay and turned into a kind of Western RPG: the world became open like never before, classic side quests appeared, and random half-turn combat was replaced by real-time skirmishes with the ability to fine-tune the behavior of companions (just like in Dragon Age: Origins ). For a JRPG, it was a huge step forward, but the story had to be sacrificed. The political squabbles in the Fairy Kingdom proved to be much less interesting for most players than the emotional dramatic stories from previous games, and the pace of the narrative had to be significantly reduced.

Square Enix is going through a tough time right now (with the departure of key people and the stagnation of the entire Japanese gaming industry), and the last two games in its flagship series clearly show that it is trying to grope for the future direction of the series. As a result, Final Fantasy XIII is almost the exact opposite of the twelfth part. In contrast, absolutely all the components of the thirteenth Final Fantasy work to tell the player an exciting story in an incredible, fantastically beautiful world. But at the same time, the developers took away even that small illusion of freedom that was in all previous games in the series.

Playing strong emotions

As expected, there are summons in the game — large and very dangerous creatures that you can call to help you. In the thirteenth part, they turned into transformers. This horned knight, for example, can become a horse.

When you sit down to Final Fantasy XIII, you need to be very aware that for the next twenty-five hours you will be playing a completely linear game. There will be no world map, no cities, no communication with other people, no shopping, or even the ability to return to an already completed location or change the composition of the battle group. Only moving forward along a winding corridor, fights with monsters and story scenes. In words, it sounds monstrous. So monstrous that many fans of the series, having learned about it, clutch their heads without even looking at the game itself.

The main mistake of game designers is that Final Fantasy XIII swings for a very long time. The introductory part lasts for almost ten hours, and the game is fully revealed when the story goes beyond the middle. The developers seem to be afraid to dump all the possibilities on the player right away and give them out a teaspoon per hour. Many are not ready to put up with this state of affairs and scold the game for what it is worth.

The character development system is a simplified version of Final Fantasy X. From the outside, however, it still looks incomprehensible.

At first, only Final Fantasy branded magic, which begins to happen from the first frames of the introductory video, keeps you at the screen. The game world turned out to be so interesting and original that the longer you stay in it, the more you want to know about it. And it is especially pleasant that for the first time in the history of the series, we are being told a new story. A story about how a group of people find themselves in a hopeless situation and what is going on in their souls at that time. The heroes of Final Fantasy XIII do not save the universe, as was the custom in the past. They solve their own, by no means trivial, problems and do not care about what is happening around. At first, it is quite difficult to understand the motives of their actions, they will become completely clear, again, only by the middle of the game. Guessing that each of them has their own skeleton in the closet (or even more than one) is also not immediately possible. Well, what problems can a carefree teenage girl have, who only does what she laughs and cheers everyone up even in the most joyless moments? Or how can you imagine that a cheerful black man with a microphone-style haircut (in the bowels of which, by the way, lives a chocobo chicken) will very soon put a gun to his head?

Don’t be scared! This is just an ordinary fighter of the local security service.

To figure out how the heroes got to such a life, we must say a few words about the world in which everything happens. It is divided into two parts: the planet Pulse and the artificial city of Cocoon hovering above it. People here are by no means the most developed race. Everything is run by god-like creatures fal’Cie (Fal’Cie). The population of Cocoon lives in permanent fear of the lower world, the war with which took place several centuries ago. It is forbidden for people to leave the city, and, in general, no one wants to. The most terrible fate is considered to be marked by a fel’Cie. Such poor fellows become l’Cie (el’Cie), fel’Cie slaves and enemies of Cocoon. Each of them receives a certain task, and if he does not cope with it, he becomes a soulless monster. For success, the “reward” is also not the most joyful: a person who completes the mission receives eternal life, but turns into a crystal.

As you might guess, all our heroes become El’Cie and find themselves in a terrible situation: not only are the entire population of Cocoon ganging up on them, but also the timer inexorably counts down the seconds remaining until the end of their life in human form. The whole plot is built around this drama. It is very interesting to watch how understandable characters are revealed under such pressure. Emotions are running high. Final Fantasy XIII is one of the few games that truly touches the soul. After some time, you realize that you are by no means indifferent to the fate of the heroes. From an observer, you turn into a participant in events. For modern games, the phenomenon is rare: Final Fantasy XIII makes you feel and empathize, and this is one of its main trump cards.

Attention, the question is: which of the peacefully sitting figures in a hoodie will jump up in a moment, do somersaults under the ceiling and kick the pensive man in the middle into a deep knockout? The minute has gone!

Moreover, over time it becomes clear why the game was made so linear. There is simply no other way to tell this story. It would be terribly stupid if the characters in their position went to explore the world and solve other people’s problems — it’s like Jack Bauer from 24 suddenly decided to take a nap for a couple of hours in the middle of the season.

Only when the heroes cope with their mental suffering and develop a more or less clear plan of action, the pace of the game will slow down, and you will be allowed to do your own thing: explore the area, upgrade, hunt quest monsters. All this is in the game, but it appears after a very long time after the start.

Disregarding tradition

A shortlist of fan-familiar items not in Final Fantasy XIII

— The classic piano melody, which sounded in different arrangements in the first frames of all previous games in the series, did not find a place in the thirteenth part. Maybe this is a symbol of change, or maybe its absence is due to the departure of Nobuo Uematsu, the main composer of Final Fantasy.

— In many games, Biggs and Wedge, cartoon characters spied on by the Japanese in George Lucas’ Star Wars, participated in episodic roles. They don’t exist in the new game. Just as there are no living Muggles, funny creatures with pom-poms on their heads.

— Starting from the seventh part, «Limits» firmly settled in the combat system, super-powerful attacks that became available if the hero was properly bludgeoned. In the thirteenth part, they are not: apparently, because the characters get hurt in the forehead in almost every battle.

— Mini-games loved by many also went under the knife. No more chocobo racing, card games, and blitzball (the latter, maybe for the better).

I’ll fly, just give me time

No wonder this woman’s name is Lightning. You should have seen her left hook!

The combat system is another important component of the game, which, like the plot, is not revealed immediately. At first, it may seem that it is elementary and comes down to pressing a single button. Coupled with corridors as straight as the gyrus of Tidus, this state of affairs makes a depressing impression, so many simply refuse to play further and go to scribble angry messages on the forums. But if you give her a little time, it turns out that the combat system of Final Fantasy XIII is almost the best in the history of the series.

The first negative impression is due to the fact that the battles are heavily automated. You can only manage the leader of a group of three, but even manually assigning teams is practically not required. It is enough to press the Auto Battle button, and the character himself will choose and implement the most effective attacks from his arsenal. However, after a couple of hours, the so-called paradigms, or, in Russian, specializations, will become available to the heroes. There are six of them: commando (physical attack), ravager (magic), medic, guardian (tank), synergist (strengthens his own) and saboteur (weakens enemies). The most interesting thing is that paradigms can be changed right during the battle. And here it becomes clear what an important thing the developers did: they shifted the focus from stupid micromanagement (climbing through branched menus with dozens of abilities, some of which no one needs at all) to tactical planning and the fastest possible response to the current situation. This is a transition to a completely different level of thinking. You have to juggle paradigms all the time, and the further you delve into the game, the more difficult the battles become, and even ordinary enemies can knock you out, you just have to be distracted for a second.

The game was not complete without banal bravura speeches. But the further into the forest, the less they become. Although this young man bends his line longer than the others.

In addition to health, opponents have another gauge that fills up as you hit, and drops if you go into a dead defense. When it is filled to the top, the damage dealt increases significantly. Without the use of this most useful property, especially strong opponents die extremely slowly, which is not only boring, but also dangerous for your team. The game encourages the most effective reprisal against enemies: the faster you achieve victory, the higher your rating and the higher the chance to get rare items after the battle. And they, in turn, are vital for improving equipment. As a result, the battles turned out to be dynamic, tense and amazingly spectacular.

You never get tired of being surprised at the development of characters until the very end. It’s scary to imagine how many man-hours were spent on animation alone.

Of course, we can’t help but say a couple of warm words about the appearance of the game. Final Fantasy XIII is beautiful to the point of insanity, and it’s not even in the engine, but in the art direction. Each location, each scene with monstrous force presses on a sense of beauty: a frozen lake, a tropical beach in the rays of the setting sun, a majestic forest where rays of light break through the foliage … The animation and facial expressions of the characters are generally the best to date. In this regard, even 9 passes before the new Final Fantasy0011 Heavy Rain . Well, it’s already somehow embarrassing to even admire luxurious CG videos — everyone seems to know that Square Enix has always been the best in this respect and, apparently, will remain so for a long time to come.

In conclusion, we remind you that the game was released not only on the PlayStation 3, but also on the Xbox 360. The differences between the versions are not as significant as one might conclude from the cries of excited individuals on the forums. In fact, the only real problem with the Xbox version is that the cutscenes are very compressed. The in-game graphics are almost indistinguishable from the version for the PlayStation 3. Of course, it is better to play on this platform, but if you do not have a PS3 and are not planning to, you will not lose much.

* * *

Final Fantasy XIII is likely to go down in history as the most controversial installment in the series. The developers went to the experiment and made the game for the sake of the plot, and did not nail the plot with nails to an already finished game. This explains all the simplifications and unprecedented even for JRPG linearity. If this circumstance is understood and forgiven, the game is able to deliver as much joy as no other Final Fantasy has ever delivered. But also, developers should not forget that the same trick will not work the second time, and by the fifteenth part (the fourteenth, we recall, will be online), players expect from them nothing less than the perfect balance between plot and gameplay. Square Enix has already proven that individually it can deliver both of these at the highest level. It remains to combine them in one game.
