Anno 1602: Creation of a New World is a game from an Austrian company that combines the principles of real-time strategy and city building elements.
The story is set in the Early Modern period and is based on colony building and resource management on a series of small islands. The game includes aspects of exploration, combat, diplomacy and trade.
The period of the game is the same as that of Sid Meier’s Colonization, however it introduces more detailed colony management, without the «Old World» politics. Some aspects, such as expanding and moving resources, are reminiscent of early Settlers games. Anno 1602 is not focused on combat, but on the economy; players rarely compete in combat. At one time, they noted the «progressive» artificial intelligence of the game, which reacts to the speed of the players.
With a mixture of simulation and strategy genres, Anno 1602 gives the player the chance to create a realistic and animated world. The ultimate goal of the game is to open a chain of islands, populate and develop them, and then trade with other players. Players can also trade between their own colonies, as well as with neutral computer forces, like tribes.
Basically, 1602 AD is a game about colony building and trading simulation. The player starts as an unnamed European nation that wants to expand its influence to the New World.
in the beginning, you need to quickly find the nearest island, colonize it and start creating an economy. The American release contains both all 6 scenarios that complement the educational and training games, and 9new scenarios, along with a «free play role».
Anno 1602 also has online and network games that support up to 4 players at the same time. Since network technologies were not in the most developed state at the time of the release of the game, lags and disconnections often occur. However, Anno 1602 is still played by small groups of players, either via LAN or the internet.
Civilizations
1602 AD is designed to be as civilization neutral as possible. After entering a name, the player is presented with a choice of one of 4 signboards of different colors, representing countries. From this point on, you can either start the game in one of the many scenarios, or act as in a freeform game. This approach radically distinguishes 1602 AD from games like The Settlers and Age of Empires; it is noted that the lack of detail makes the game shallow.
Technology
Unlike other games where technology plays an important role in the victory of one player over another, in Anno 1602 technological upgrades are more related to the internal affairs of the colony. Instead of buying upgrades that improve the combat performance of ships, it is often necessary to take upgrades to the ship’s cargo capacity, which is intended to bring additional money to the colony. Most in-game buildings can be technologically upgraded to please colonial citizens; this way the colony will produce more money that can be used to further upgrade the nation, including expanding to other islands.
Units
In 1602 AD, the player must reach a certain amount of population before gaining access to weapons factories. After getting the factories, you need the process of building buildings that help create weapons and units. After building buildings, the player must constantly pay a certain amount of money to keep the building active.
