Editors’ Choice

A hugely ambitious action blockbuster, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is filled with sharp satire, fascinatingly flawed characters, and a huge variety of ways to play. Explore the cities and countryside of a vividly realized fictional version of the southwestern United States. You can tackle story-driven quests, gorge on fast food, outrun the police, or obey every traffic light—it’s up to you. This enormous game deftly displays Rockstar’s unique mastery of open-world design, and it never fails to entertain.

Great game but some glitches

I love this game, very fun, but there are a few glitches. The first one is on the robbery mission, sometimes when you get close to something CJ gets stuck on something and you can’t move which wakes up the person inside and then you get a 3 star wanted level. Another one is that the wrecking ball does not exist it is just a floating metal ball. Whenever I try to put a car in a garage it says you cannot store anymore vehicles in this garage even though my garage is completely empty and if I try to push my car in it will delete it. Another glitch I have experienced is that when I die during a gang war it gives the territory to me or it just removes it which I’m pretty sure is not supposed to happen. The last glitch happens on a date sometimes when you finish doing what she tells you to do instead of telling you to take her home, it doesn’t do that and when you do take her home you can’t drop her off, so you end up stuck with her and I have to restart the game. Also please put an option to disable tilt controls because I have to try to keep my iPad perfectly flat because if I don’t the car will pull to the other direction and it’s annoying.

Overall good but needs a little closer look…

Its a little glitchy but it runs good enough that I can get through the game. I really wish they added gps like the definitive edition and maybe a tab in the pause menu for entering cheats. Ive played this for well over a decade it was easy for me to map my controls in a way that I could play in this touch screen style. Controls for the most part make sense. I will say I was stuck on the mission when you have to dance with the DJ. Idk how the scoring system works on that but I only messed up once on the dancing part and didnt have enough points. Seems a bit too challenging I can only imagine the mission when you have to control the RC plane 🤦🏽. It could be because im still not as used to using touch screen as opposed to a controller but im sure the same could be said for many. I feel like that dancing mission specifically needs to be made less challenging. Last thing I would add is an option to save photos you take with the camera in-game to your phone so you can share crazy stuff that you catch.

best game i’ve got yet !

when i got this game i was so excited and i couldn’t wait to play it once i played it, i was in the zone i really enjoyed it and now is the only game i play, i also like the characters in this game especially the crooked cop Officer Tenpenny who is voiced by no other than Samuel L Jackson who i thought suited the character very well and some of the cinematic sequences was almost like a real movie with the characters attitude towards each other. I found this game very amusing because the cities remind you of America itself even though i haven’t been there yet.Who ever gets this game should thank themselves for getting it i give this game 10/10 this is a good upgrade from vice city.

GTA: San Andreas | The plot, characters, cheat codes, transport

Location

For the first time in the Grand Theft Auto series, players are given the opportunity to explore an entire state, which consists of three full-fledged cities: Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, surrounded by vast expanses of countryside, including: forests, deserts, water bodies and even mountains.

One of the features that was common in Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (and later Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories) was the absence of the «Welcome to. ..» splash screen, which often interrupted the game in previous games; in San Andreas, the transition between zones occurs without any screensavers.

Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas includes all the familiar elements of the series, which are already familiar to players from previous installments. The gameplay itself includes elements of a third-person shooter and driving, where the player is given a large open area to move around. The player character is able to walk, run, swim (in the first Grand Theft Auto games, diving and swimming was not possible, the player always drowned), there are some elements of climbing, jumping, as well as the use of weapons and various forms of hand-to-hand combat.

Carl Johnson is the most (custom) customizable protagonist in the Grand Theft Auto series. In the game, the player is given the opportunity to change his clothes, tattoos, hairstyle, and even body weight, he can be fat, skinny or buff.

For the first time in the history of the series, the main character can climb up the hill, climb over the fences. It also became possible to acquire vehicles, and not just steal them. The transport catalog has also expanded, at your service: cars, boats, planes, helicopters, trains, tanks, motorcycles, and bicycles. Some vehicles can be tuned at one of the Los Santos Customs stations.

Characters

Carl Johnson

Carl Johnson was born in Los Santos when it was 1968. His mother, Beverly Johnson, raised four children all by herself. Karl never knew his father and was raised by his older brother Sean (Sweet). CJ also has a sister, Kendl, and a younger brother, Brian.

In the late 80s, Carl becomes the leader of the Grove Street Families. In the same year, CJ’s younger brother Brian dies in a car accident. Afterwards, Sean holds Carl responsible for the death of their little brother. Immediately after these events, CJ leaves Los Santos and travels to Liberty City. There, he engages in auto theft and petty robbery with Joey Leone.

Four years later, in 1992, Karl returns to his hometown to bury his mother, who was killed. Carl notices that his gang is close to complete collapse, and decides to help her return to its former greatness.

Frank Tenpenny

Frank Tenpenny is a corrupt Los Santos police officer. And although he claims to be the main opponent of street gangs in the city, this does not prevent him from secretly collaborating with the Ballas gang.

Melvin Harris

Melvin Harris is one of the leaders of the Grove Street Families. Other members of the gang respect him for his intelligence and ability to quickly make the right decision. Believes in God.

Sean Johnson

Sean «Sweet» Johnson is Carl’s older brother who became the leader of the Grove Street Families after CJ left for Liberty City.

Vehicles

In total, there are about 250 different vehicles in the game: from bicycles to jetpacks. The physics and features of the cars are similar to the Midnight Club street racing series, which allows for much better vehicle control.

Different classes of vehicles are good in their own specific conditions. SUVs are perfect for those who like to drive through the countryside or the desert. Planes are fast, but they need a runway. Helicopters can land almost anywhere, they are much easier to control in the air, but they are slower.

In the previous games of the series, there were only a few aircraft that were not always available, and some were practically unusable. There are eleven planes and nine helicopters in San Andreas, and they are more accessible and more useful in the game’s missions. You can also skydive from an airplane.

Weapons

The arsenal of weapons has been replenished with a number of new «toys» that will help you create real chaos in the state. Also, quite strange objects appeared in the game, such as: a bouquet of flowers, four types of dildos, a cane, etc. Otherwise, much of the proposed arsenal was present in GTA: Vice City.

As in the previous parts, weapons are divided into categories and the player cannot carry all weapons available in the game at the same time. You will have to choose what you need for a particular task or mission.

Hobbies and entertainment

There was a lot to do in GTA: Vice City. But Rockstar Games has gone a step further and presented the world with an arsenal of things to do in between missions. GTA: San Andreas, along with Grand Theft Auto V, rightfully hold the palm in this aspect to this day.

Go out to your yard and play basketball, invite your girlfriend to dance in a trendy club. Equip your lowrider with air suspension and show the whole neighborhood who’s the best prancing to the beat. Play billiards, poker, blackjack and spend tons of accumulated money.

When there is no money left, go hunting for someone else’s property. The game has the ability to rob other people’s houses. An integral part of the «black» culture.

Multiplayer

The game has a cooperative mode where two players can play. This feature is only available on the Playstation 2 and Xbox consoles.

This mode works on the same screen, so players can’t stray too far from each other to avoid losing sight of themselves. To enable the cooperative mode, you should find a special marker that is present in different areas of the state.

Modders created a number of mods to help PC gamers get this functionality, but it all ended up with imperfect controls that didn’t allow for normal play.

In return, all owners of the PC version of the game have the opportunity to install unofficial multiplayer add-ons such as Multi Theft Auto, Tournament, Rumble and San Andreas Multiplayer, which expand the functionality of the game to an incredible extent, thanks to the ability to write your own scripts, create individual modes and much more other.

Influence

GTA: SA — like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — is heavily based on films from the late 1980s and early 1990s. The game’s soundtrack includes genres such as gangsta rap, alternative/grunge/metal and new jack swing, which were typical of the same era.

Menace II Society

Many aspects of San Andreas were taken from the 1993 movie Menace II Society. In addition to the city itself, (Los Santos is based on Los Angeles), the game also has a reference to the main street of the characters in the film (Grove Street). The storyline also has several similar similarities to the movie. For example, one of the members of the Grove Street Families that you can meet on the street (he wears dreadlocks) resembles the O-Dog character from the movie.

«New Jack City»

Another film that has had more impact is «New Jack City». This is especially noticeable in the storyline in San Fierro. In the game, CJ befriends and works with Jizzy B to infiltrate and take down the Loco Syndicate, much like Scotty Appleton did in the movie with Nino Brown. The character Jizzy B is recreated based on Nino Brown. In the game itself, you can make CJ look like Nino Brown (if you dress CJ in Victim). Also, Big Smoke’s apartment towards the end of the game resembles the apartment of one of the characters in the movie.

It is also worth noting the similarity with such films as «Colors» (Colors) 1988, «Officer Eddie Pulaski» (Officer Eddie Pulaski) and «Crash» (The C.R.A.S.H.), in which the police of Los Angeles leads a fierce fight with the gangs. By the way, this is the name of Frank Tenpenny’s unit in the game itself, which is a direct reference to the film.

Other references

  • Boyz n the Hood — Much of the gameplay is based on elements from this movie.
  • Casino (Casino) — the plot of the game in Las Venturas consists of a number of references to this great film.
  • Con Air — There are at least two scenes in the game that are exactly like scenes from this movie (when donuts fall to the ground on two cops on motorcycles, and when a fire truck is chased). And finally, the aircraft graveyard is similar to what was in the movie.
  • Easy Rider — The Truth’s hippie character was voiced by Peter Fonda, who starred in this film.
  • Pulp Fiction — There is a moment in the movie when Vincent Vega calls his friend Lance to tell him he has a girlfriend in his car, but Lance hangs up and says «I don’t know you, wrong number, stop joking, stop joking!” knowing that the police might be tapping their line. The same phrase was said in a conversation between The Truth and CJ in one of the missions.
  • To Live and Die in L.A. — one of the car chases in the game is similar to the car chases in this movie.
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day — The first few chases bear similarities to those in the movie. Especially in the «Just Business» mission.
  • Training Day — Officer Tenpenny is a parody of Denzel Washington’s character from the film.

Hot Coffee / Hot Coffee

San Andreas has become one of the most popular and talked about games in world history for many reasons. One of these is a high-profile scandal that happened in 2005. Many people know it as «Hot Coffee».

This happened in the middle of June 2005. Patrick Wildenberg, a 38-year-old resident of the beautiful Netherlands, who is known online as «PatrickW», posted a patch for a game called «Hot Coffee» and made history.

The fact is that in the final release of the game, after a walk with one of his girlfriends, the protagonist accompanies her to the door, and she asks if he would like to come in «to drink coffee.» If the player agrees, the camera stays outside the house and starts to wobble back and forth a bit as moans come from inside the house. After installing «Hot coffee», the player gets the opportunity to enter the houses of the main character’s girlfriends and take part in a special mini-game. We think you have already guessed which one.

If it was a simple mod, Rockstar Games and its publisher would have no problems, but it turned out to be much more complicated. The fact is that this mini-game was originally present in the game code and was simply disabled by the developers. Patrick, without adding a single line of code, was able to include this function in the game.

The consequences were not long in coming. Many high-ranking US officials immediately began to make a big problem out of this.

Reissue

On July 20, 2005, the ESRB, the organization that assigns age ratings to multimedia products, removed the Mature (M) rating from the game and changed it to Adults Only (AO). This marked the first time in North America that a console game of such high volume was sold with an AO rating.

Rockstar Games immediately announced that they would stop releasing copies of the game that contained hidden content. The developers have unilaterally ordered distributors to stick a sticker with an AO rating on copies of the game from the old edition. Many of the sellers were forced to withdraw the game from sale, in accordance with their own sale rules.

In Australia, the game was originally rated MA15+, but after all the events it was withdrawn. And this meant that the game could no longer be sold there.

In August 2005, Rockstar North released the official «Cold Coffee» patch for the PC version of the game and re-released GTA: SA, allowing the game to regain its «M» rating. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions have also been re-released.

A special «SECOND EDITION» rated «M» for the Playstation 2 was released on the Playstation 2, including the «Sunday Driver» documentary.

On November 8, 2007, Take-Two made an official statement to settle the lawsuit that followed the Hot Coffee controversy. Anyone who purchased an AO-rated copy of the game with cut content could trade it in for an M-rated version for free, and receive a cash payout of $35 if they applied.

Interestingly, according to The New York Times, a total of 2,676 compensation claims were filed.

Perception

Even before the release of the game on the PlayStation 2, the game was on the list of the most anticipated projects for 2004 along with Halo 2, Doom III and Half-Life 2.

Expectations were met, SA received very high marks and is one of the best games, released on PS2, according to Metacritic (95%). IGN gave the game a 9.9/10, the highest score ever given to a PlayStation 2 game.

As of March 26, 2008, GTA: SA has sold 27.5 million copies, according to Take-Two Interactive. Edition of The Guinness World Records 2009Gamer’s Edition named it the most successful game on the PlayStation 2, with 17.33 million copies of the game sold for that console alone, and a total of 21.5 million for all other formats.

Charles Herold of The New York Times gave the game’s only non-positive review, scoring 4 out of 10, criticizing the game’s «annoying» mission structure and excessive violence in the game.
